Ming just needs to learn to let the opponents come to him, instead of him stepping out and guarding them. He also needs to get more aggressive on the boards and not let smaller players outrebound him. But it'll all come with time.
With time I believe Yao will be a very good rebounder. For now from my observations Yao is not getting good enough position for rebounds and is not strong enough yet hence getting boxed out by stronger players. But also he needs to grab the boards, from what I see he's tapping them with one hand. Though the taps do mostly end up in another rockets hands, there are times they don't. He could get maybe 1 or 2 more boards per game if he jumped up for the rebounds with two hands. He's got the quickness but not the strength yet to box out but you could see the effort and determination from him to get them. Also he's not jumping enough and some of those rebounds are just an inch higher passing over his hands. With more games he will get better at it but the best thing is he's just getting started getting use to new techniques and changing his game and I really believe he's not even halfway at his best yet and he's already off to a great start. As for Blocks from what I seen it's not really that he's not trying to block shots but mostly he doesn't have the chance to. Most players that take it at him are getting fouled or their not taking the shot downlow with him standing there. Like the laker game, Kobe took Ming outside 2 or 3 times than took the shot or when he took it at him he got fouled and if he hadn't Kobe would of had no chance of making a shot over ming. Ming needs to move his body away from the shooter. Some players know this and they are using their body to get on him to get the foul almost like they know they can't get a shot off on him but they know they can get a foul so they run right at him like football or something. The only bad thing that I see is that when Ming is guarding outside the paint he's not getting a hand up fast enough or even at all giving the opponent a chance to see the basket and a getting a shot off. But one thing for sure is he's making some players change their about shooting over him like fox and mulbury a few times in the last two games. I just hope the rockets do a better job of not getting him switched on defense with quick PGs and SGs like Mulbury and Kobe.
Can Vince Carter finish a season or even lead his team when he's on the floor? Oh, wait. That would be answering a question with a question.
LA"S Rocket Fan....good points. and LeGrouper---- man you need to get a life. You and this puppet story need to go out of your room and breath some fresh air. Trust me you and your "puppet" will enjoy it. Anyway i hope Yao gets more physical in his own paint rather than on the offensive end. -----Supposedly Cuttino has been responsible for his offensive outburst the other night. Hope someone else tells him DEfence counts too.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lisa: Dad, what's a Muppet? Homer: Well, it's not quite a mop, it's not quite a puppet, but man... [laughs hysterically] Homer: So to answer your question, I don't know. I am sorry VC, you are right, you are the man. I should never doubt someone from Toronto... my bad man... I will try to get a life. I am just glad you are hear to make your abruptly clear and succint points.
Oh wow.. you are so cool man. Is making fun of monikers popular in Canada? You expect to come on the BBS and bash our top rookie and starting SG only to be praised by the regulars here? One game is enough for you to judge a player? nuff said. Stay in Canada, we dont want you here.
hahahahaha....now this is hilarious LeGrouper..... you actually quoted the simpsons...shows what Americans are all about. Franchise2001.....just for your information CANADA made BASKETBALL!!!....we may suck at it...but we showed you the GAME......so stick a sock in it....one more thing....learn how to count....Yao Ming has played more than one game.... maybe you and LeGrouper should get together. By the way: many people will agree that Cuttino Mobley takes a lot of ill advised shots, and dribbles the shot clock away. ACCORDING TO ESPN: not my own little comment by the way. When they ranked the Rockets in the league: they said something like.... 'As long as Steve Francise and Cuttino Mobley dribble the shot clock away and take all the shots; the Rockets won't see the playoffs any time soon.' NOw i don't agree with the Franchise thing...cause i think he's a superstar and should be taking most the shots on the team. Cuttino on the other hand is a Good SIxth man and that's about it.
yao is averaging 1 rebound every 3-4 minutes. that is the nba benchmark for "effective" rebounding for a big man (ie if you get 1 rbd every 4.1 or greater minutes you are considered a bad rebounder). as an aside... never diss "the Simpsons" - that's your comment that offended me (and i'm in australia, so i'm not an "americanphile" )!
Leave it to the Canuks to start **** with the AUssies, man can't we all get along. Ain't there enuf wars already.......America...
LMFAO.. Who can blame Steve..Even Naismith didn't want to stay in CANADA He invented the game in America and it was first played by Americans..I don't see how in the hell you can say "CANADA made BASKETBALL!!!...." You are right about one thing though.."we may suck at it"
It shows.. because you wouldnt say something like this.. If you've seen what eddie's playing in the pre-season/season.. he's seriously kicking ass on the blocks.. and he's only young, so of course he lacks a bit of consistency.. also.. just like to state for the record WOULD EVERYONE STOP PERSONALLY BASHING EACH OTHER... i'm sick of looking through threads of $#$%.. and trying to find some real points/ideas..
What is easy about blocking shots? Even the best shotblockers can get only a few per game. It is actually a pretty rare talent (and it is a talent more than it is a result on one's height) -- and one we're lucky to have in Eddie Griffin. I think it is also an area that is hard for rookies to excel at because they do not get the benefit on foul calls.
In the Cavs game box score, it shows Yao with two blocks. I didn't even see them. It must have been just tips or something. I saw one where he tipped a shot of Hill's shot as he got fouled by Maurice Taylor. Where was the other block?
