they're not legal in all states. but i'm sure as hell happy they're legal in Texas. be grateful, don't question!
I used to have a radar dectector in my car and the only thing it ever made me do was to slow down. Now that I don't have a radar detector I still speed just as much, but don't slow down because I don't hear beeping. I just am always on the lookout for the po-po. So it never made me break the law - it actually made me slow down...
Hey bigtexx, you slowed down because you broke the speed limit, no? It's illegal in California. If you think about it, a decent detector costs as much as a speeding ticket....
but it also saves you from a lot of speeding tickets. i can think of at least 15-20 times i've avoided a ticket over the past 5 years b/c of my detector.
.. but they wouldn't need to slow down if they weren't speeding in the first place? So accidents can only happen when the coppers are around?

Nobody really knows what the legal reasoning is behind having them be legal. It would only be ascertainable had they enacted a statute making them illegal. That way we would have legislative history that we could look up. Since we are speculating here, how about that the airwaves should be free for all. The fact that you can detect radar does not necessarily mean that you will break the law.
I think the reason they are legal is because of what bigtexxx said. It makes people slow down. When my radar is on, Im find myself driving consistatnly slower than when it is off. And all in all, if it slows people down, then it cant be too bad now can it? Besides, if cops really want to catch you......they'd laser your butt. Try detecting that in time.
Why are descramblers legal? Technically you are not supposed to use descramblers to steal cable and not supposed to use radar detectors to speed but people do anyways. This guy who parks next to me uses radar and that "scramble shield" or whatever it's called on his license plate. Supposedly it jams the radar gun. I dunno looks pretty flimsy. Also what's the point of having speed detectors that say "You are going ___ MPH"? If you go over the speed limit the text changes from yellow to red, but the doofuses forgot that you only know the speed of the car in front of you, not your own speed.
Descramblers are legal to make and legal to own...they are ILLEGAL to use. Certain companies have descramblers to test their equipment, that's why they are legal.
radar detectors are legal. Scramblers are illegal. I believe detectors are legal do to someting along the freedom of speech provision. You are allowed to have this technology and you have the right to know if you are being radared. but you can not manipulate the signal in anyway.
