Iverson: 'I'm scared to be here'

    November 19, 2002

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson is afraid police are targeting him and he might want to leave the city, according to published reports.

``I want to be in Philadelphia, but I'm scared to be here,'' the NBA star told The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News in Tuesday's editions.

They were Iverson's first public comments about his off-the-court troubles last summer.

Iverson and his wife, Tawanna, gave an interview to the newspapers Monday at the 76ers' practice facility, to blunt the impact of what the couple said is an unflattering TV news report on Iverson's personal life. The interview was attended by their lawyer, Larry Woodward.

``I've heard about police officers toasting to Allen Iverson's next felony conviction,'' Iverson said. ``I'm hearing about them saying I'm involved with one thing or another, and it scares me. I know that if there's a crooked cop out there, they could do anything to me. He could do anything. Allen Iverson could wind up dead tomorrow if a crooked cop wants him dead. It's as simple as that.''

A spokesman for the police department, Inspector William Colarulo, said misconduct of any nature would never be tolerated by police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson.

Iverson did not speak to reporters at the team's morning shootaround in New Orleans before Tuesday night's game against the Hornets. The Sixers had no immediate comment on the report.

During the 90-minute interview with the newspapers, the Iversons also denied reports of domestic abuse.

Iverson and his uncle were accused of barging into an apartment on July 3 and threatening the two men inside while Iverson looked for his wife after he allegedly threw her out of their house. He was charged with several felonies, but the charges were eventually dropped.

``My husband never hit me, and he did not throw me out of the house naked,'' Tawanna Iverson said.

Anticipating that Philadelphia TV station WXTF is planning a news segment raising questions about Iverson's lifestyle, the couple thought it was time to speak out. The NBA star had been advised by his lawyers to not discuss the situation.

WXTF news director Scott Matthews said it is the station's policy not to confirm or deny the content of any of its programs.

Iverson is concerned about the media attention he and his wife have received since last summer.

``I worry about Tawanna all the time,'' he said. ``She rides with security before the game, after the game. There's security for 24 hours at our house.''

When the Mayor has to come in and keep the police in line to make sure that Iverson gets a fairshake in court then you have a SERIOUS problem. Iverson has done some bad things, but if this is true, nobody deserves to go through this crap.

He's earned some of it, but -- it is ridiculous! And he's fun to watch while out on parole, I mean on the court.

AI could do with some personal changes to overcome his past histories. But past is past. Not prologue?

He's playing a sympathy card on you... He is a thug, be it talented one... but he has brought every bit of this on himself.

    Awesome second post!!!:D

Friday, I think you probably take the cake on the oldest member with the fewest number of posts. Props to you!

BTW...I agree about Iverson. Stay out of trouble, watch who you roll with and stop being a punk and maybe things will ease up on you! You reap what you sow!

LOL. Iverson is an idiot. He got treated like a king during the trial. They let him throw hosue parties the whole freaking time. I live in Philly, and when I heard it on Sports Radio, I couldn't help laughing.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Iverson was completely clear or not at fault, a lot of it lays at his feet, but they released so much garbage to the media, stuff that was proven not to be true, or couldn't be proven at all, it's hard to believe they didn't have a hidden agenda. Sometimes I think some police department drag things on to get publicity. And the Philadelphia media isn't any better.

He threw his wife out of his house naked. He is a thug. The cops treated him like a prince. They let him throw house parties the whole time.

Wait, he wasn't convicted of anything right? So it's ok for the police to have toasts to bringing Iverson down? He's no model citizen, but except for that one time he was busted with a gun in his car, he hasn't exactly done anything to warrent this kind of scrutiny.

He wasn't convicted because he is the most popular athlete, other then McNabb, in Philly.

``My husband never hit me, and he did not throw me out of the house naked,'' Tawanna Iverson said.

So if he threw her out of the house with some clothes on then everything's all good.

Did you not read the article? His wife said that it was all false.

So what proof do you have that he did throw her out? The Police report? You may not like the guy, but at least be fair.

Well, she said he didn't throw her out naked. She didn't deny that he threw her out. I have to believe that part is true. However, don't think his 15 counts were only dismissed because he was famous. The stuff about him threatening folks with a gun was simply a lie.

All the same, if what Iverson says is true, that would be unfair treatment from the police and he should be scared. Mostly, though, it sounds like paranoia to me.
