Van Gundy ..Dunleavy.. you're kidding ... right ?

Instead of just throwing out some names tell us why these guys would be a better choice than Rudy ????

Van Gundy I don't like but thats beside the point..lets say he does come back ?? Whats to keep him from quitting on a team as soon as he gets bored or "unfocused" ..or whatever he wants to call it ???

Dunleavy ???? hahaha puhleeease...let's see.. 107-221 record with the Bucks...Blew a 15 point lead with ten minutes left in game seven of the Western Conference Finals against the Lakers
in 2000... Swept in the first round of the 2001 playoffs..Had no control over his players..yea do ya think we could really land such a gem ???

The grass is not always greener so be careful what you ask for .

    crash,

"Haters," "bashers," -- whatever term you use to refer to Rudy critics, it trivializes our complaints. There's nothing personal against him. I for one have been "off his ass" all that time while he arguably did "screw it up", quietly observing and and witholding criticism, having faith in Rudy to bring us success. Not just irrationally "growing impatient" as we win a few games this season, but growing impatient over an extended period as the excuses and "apologies" kept coming.

But come on -- a few wins in this young season with a soft schedule to date doesn't wipe out a few years of stagnation and futility. Yes we are winning for the moment, and I'm glad. But is it because of Rudy's coaching? Or as I've said in another post (http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45602#post637532), are the wins attributable to individuals pulling them out, but left to their devices to manufacture points -- essentially without effective coaching.

Again, don't lump all of us critics together as "Fire Rudy" basher/haters. Those terms as typically used on this bbs are reductionist. Yes, some of the critics are knee-jerk idiots, but I think myself and a lot of people have rational opinions built over the past few years from Rudy's performance that, quite frankly, has required that "apologists" come to his defense.

I admire your loyalty to Rudy. But nobody in the league, or in the professional world for that matter, is immune from scrutiny after not performing for an extended period -- no matter his past glories. If he turns things around this year, then that would be totally sweet -- and I'll be glad that Rudy did it, rather than some outsider. But after this season, you cannot deny that he's been given a fair chance. And there's a reasonable case that it would be in the better interest of the team if he moved on -- as much as I'd hate to see him go.

Dunleavy?, no. He's Rudy Jr.! Would like to see a coach that the players respects and has an actual playbook!

    Pippen,

We are joined at the hip! I've mentioned Berry frequently. Some of the Rudy's loyalists need to ask Berry why he left for Chicago to babysit Tim Floyd instead of the all knowing Rudy? I have. The fans would be shocked to hear the answer. Ask the players who did the actual coaching during the championship years? Berry is the only coach under Rudy that is still working in the L. Coincidence?!

Arguably screwed it up? when? During the 45 win season? During last year when almost every player on the team missed significant minutes? This year now that we are currently 4th in the West? Perhaps you thought we would be in first right now. All I am saying is wait until he screws it up. He has yet to screw anything up.

Nobody said anything about expecting us to be in first place. Let me turn things around then and say, define "screws it up." A last-place finish?

What most critics have been justifiably complaining about is the lack of any offensive framework whatsoever. I've asked time and time again: how much of our struggles have been due to mistakes made on executing new plays/new sets, rather than just settling back into the same old crap? It's mostly been the latter, and that's how I think a lot of people would define a coach screwing things up. Is it not screwing things up when we come out of a timeout on a critical possession, and Steve dribbles the 7 seconds away? Is it not screwing things up when a coach can't prevent guys from time after time making the same bone-headed decisions about shot-selection or holding the ball for an eternity?

You reference the same tired rationalizations: well, we had a 45-win season...well, we had tons of injuries...well, we're winning now. But you evade critics' questions about ongoing excuses masking the coach's shortcomings, winning in spite of, rather than as a result of, true coaching, and claiming the few wins this season suddenly erase the historical problems.

I can understand your antagonism if I just came in here out of nowhere and just started talking sh*t, demanding that "we gotta can Rudy's ISO-lovin' ass." But that's not the case. As I've said before, he's had plenty of time, and plenty of excuses, and I've been accepting those excuses until now. Moreover, I'm willing to wait another season -- but no more. That's a completely reasonable opinion, and I stand by it.

The fact that you are tired of all the same old rationalizations makes them no less true. I have been tired of players being hurt now for a long time but it did not make them any more healthy.

The proof is in the pudding or so they say. We are 4th in the West. If you want to say Rudy T is screwing things up then I think you should wait until we stop winning and fall out of a play off position.

You know what it is about Rudy, we work our butts off on one on one play (or one on three plays) to get a tough shot to go down and then the other team just runs some nice screens to get a guy wide open for an easy shot. That drives me nuts. Against the Lakers, I saw maybe one play that even resembled a motion offense. We passed like 4 times, people coming off screens only to end up with Cat isolating at the top of the key. We passed, not to get an easy hoop, but to get Cat isolated. What the hell?

Yes, I too have been so frustrated with all the injuries -- it sure keeps them from running isolations. If only we weren't so banged up!

And I guess I just have to accept the fact that being 4th in the West after a few games is proof of Rudy's coaching ability.

And I guess it's not enough for you if someone says, let's wait until the end of the season before passing final judgement. But in the meantime, I'm going to be extra skeptical and critical, because I've already spent quite some time being patient.

So let no one from this point forward question Rudy, nor cast a critical eye. Banish any skepticsm from your mind. And accept unorganized street ball unconditionally.

Let me start off by saying, "I love you wife!" :)

Rudy is an average X and O coach. I can see both sides to this thread. not extreme sides though, because it is very difficult to coach in the NBA and we have to give some for that.

Overall, Rudy is also an above average coach IMHO, considering the intangibles...

so according to you, people have no right to complain at all just because we're 2 games above .500?? as easily as you call people "haters" some could argue you're a "blind homer".

hamachi is posting excellent reasons and i happen to agree w/ him 100%. most of the winning hasnt been coming due to rudy "out-coaching" anyone, it's been determined mostly by excellent individual play.

dont get me wrong, i love us winning right now, but there's no reason we havent been playing better than we are. i mean, we beat a Shaq-less by 3 (they lost to the Cavs by more), and that's w/ Yao going off for 20. my complaint is that we're playing far below our potential. rudy's a great players coach, but you cant sit here and tell me that he's great at implementing offensive plays and setting up the O. you can't, so dont even try.

i'm not calling for his head right now or anything, but if there aint vast improvements by the end of this season, i will be.

so if you want to call me a "hater" go for it. i'll call you blind and ignorant.

swt, thanks for backing me up on this.

Giving him one more season and personally hoping he does show some real coaching chops, while truly turning things around -- that has to be as measured and moderate a critique as can possibly be made. I don't want this to turn into a personal flame war, but if someone can't find that acceptable, then they are a blind homer. And I can take that one step further and question their loyalty and interest in seeing this team really succeed.

    1. what I am saying is that it is ridiculous to say a coach is doing a bad job when he takes a team that won 28 games the year before and has them currently sitting at 4th in the conference. I am saying at least wait until he screws it up before calling him a screw up.

    2. You don't like our 4-point win against the Lakers? How about the 3 OT games they have played this year against Boston, Portland and GS? Portland lost! How about S.A.'s 5pt win against them? They only have 3 losses that are double digits and two were with out Rick Fox. They are in all of their games.

    3. Right now the Rockets are winning 60% of their games and are on pace to hold home court advantage in the first round of the play off’s. At the end of the season if we maintain this but you don't like the style of play you will call for Rudy T's head? What sense does that make?

I have never said that Rudy T is perfect or that he might not screw it up but until now he has not.

Stackhouse drove on the Lakers and dunked the Wizards to victory. If Steph was a couple inches taller, we might have been owned like that as well.

That was an awful game for Rudy. He got exploited on the mismatch and I think defence preparation wasn't as good as it should been since Steph was unstopable. No way a last play like the one Phoenix had should ever be allowed...

    Ham,

Your argument is flawless! No emotion, just plain facts. You'd think we are watching something entirely different. I've stated ad nauseum, watch the Rox after a timeout in the 4th Qtr. No organization! SF and CM play that way because the Rox don't have any offensive or defensive structure. That is RT's job!

Take a look at the poll, the readers have spoken up. Nobody mentions Rudy when it comes to X's and O's. I think Rudy is great with building relationships with players and they love to play for him.

However he is poor when it comes to recognizing mismatches and drawing up a play. The only play we know is a pick and roll with guard penetration. Teams with better D stop us from scoring. Why wasn't Ming in the game at the end with 6.5 seconds. A simple pick and roll with Steve and Mo with a simple lob to Ming would have worked to perfection.

Hawkins drive and dish to Ming totally fooled the Faker's yesterday.

Coaches who X's and O's that are flat out better
Pat Riley (Definitely win more games with this team than Rudy)

Phil Jackson (Zen my eye, this guy can coach)

    Lenny Wilkens (All time winner/loser)

Nate McMillian (He killed the Rockets as a player)

Jerry Sloan (Utah beat us to sleep for years with pick and roll, we still haven't figured out how to defense Stockton/Malond, age is the only thing that is stops malone/stockton)

Rick Carlisle (Look at Detroits lineup compared to ours, we should killed Detroit, won't happen because Carlisle beats Rudy to the punch)

Bottom line Rudy gets out coached more than he out coaches. I don't hate on Rudy, however, the facts are self evident.

    Man,

Exactly! I wonder what the other CC members are looking for when coaching blunders occur on Rudy's watch.
