What's the proper spelling: Gadhafi or Gaddafi? Also, shouldn't this be in the HANGOUT? See if it rivals the Osama Bin Laden thread? GRAPHIC from CNN: Spoiler
It's always amazing to see how defiant these dictators are and a few months later they hiding in a hole and begging for their lives.
The only "proper" spelling is in Arabic ... any English transliteration is just a phonetic approximation of the original. That's why you see Gaddafi, Gadhafi, Qaddafi, etc.

Well, I'd rather not celebrate somebody's death, regardless of who he is. Some people need to be killed, but that doesn't make it a happy ocassion in my mind. I think the whole thing (dictatorship and oppression, revolution and killing) tragic. It shouldn't have to be this hard. I'm glad Libyans are free of him, that's all.
I understand that Juan, but I think a little celebration is in order after a man gets his come uppance when he had tortured and brutalized people for 30 years. DD
We might consider these despots evil because they are ruthless and conscienceless in their execution of power. But, they may well only be doing what is necessary to maintain order amongst equally violent tribal rivalries that would assume power if they could. It seems that what really ends up defining them as evil is the material excesses. A leader like Castro might hold an autocratic power over his people, but if he seems to live humbly with that power there isn't the drive to overthrow him. The lesson might be applied to the scions of Wall Street. If those guys would limit their compensations to the functionally opulent tens of millions instead of the greedy hundreds of millions they might not draw such ire.
LOL, he was not a nice guy, he was a thief and a power hungry maniac. His story is kind of complicated, when he initially came in power he had the support of most of the tribes. King Idris was allowing most of the profits from the oil production to be drained by the oil companies (i believe it was about 50-60%). When Mommar came he told the US and European oil companies to leave, along with the US air base there. That's when the West did what they've usually done, trying a few different things to have him "removed". Mommar started with a very good idea, but things got complicated and he went into the wrong direction. OIL is a beautiful thing isn't it.
Wow, apparently they have video of him wounded and alive. I guess it really remains to be seen what happened to him, but it doesn't look like this guy didn't go out the easy way. http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/wo.../2011/10/20/nr-gadhafi-last-moments-alive.cnn

My google translation of that facebook page has taught me that the Arabic dialect uses the pejorative 'donkey' frequently.
I'm Chinese so I can safely say most Chinese in China don't think he's a good person as he is responsible for a lot of civilian deaths. That said, most Chinese think the West-backed revolution will eventually cause even more civilian deaths, as in the case of Iraq.
