Yeah, I remember that in a few other threads I believe. The funny thing is, I know my institution and many other institutions accept transfer credit from these types of schools. So you could take a good portion of your coursework there and transfer to a typical brick and mortar school and they'd almost never know the difference. Many brick and mortar colleges offer online degrees now but they are not designated that way by the institution so you would never know the difference there either.

when your school trades on the stock market, you know it isn't about education.

We were talking about that earlier in the thread. Steve Eisman is shorting for-profit college groups. Take your pick, I could see them all going down.

Yeah, that's about what OU is for in-state. But, then again, OU's a pretty good deal.

most public schools in the usa charge about that amount.

It's the private schools that in my opinion are a real scam unless you are talking about a ivy/stanford/mit etc.

In principle, private schools have to charge somewhat higher tuition just because they do not receive state funding.

Taking graduate classes at a private (not for profit) school myself (not paying for it, so perhaps my judgement is skewed), I can say that the quality of education is definitely greater than my undergrad at a public school. That doesn't mean I wish I had gone to a private school for undergrad -- I don't, because it would have been too expensive and I think there are very few schools/degrees that can be justified by paying $20k or more per year in tuition.

But I wouldn't call all private outside of Ivy League and Stanford a scam. If you have the means, and/or a true potential for salary increase and advancement, a graduate degree at a private school can definitely be worth it. You just have to do your research on the school.

ESI (ITT) and APOL (University of Phoenix)

I have turned some handsome profits on these particular concerns.

College is not about educating kids
It is simply a market to be exploited like any other

Capitalism is about making a profit
Whether it is through someone else's misfortunes [i.e. health care, funeral parlors]
or someone trying to be better [i.e. colleges and schools]

It is about the money . . the vehicle to getting the money is irrelevent
    GET THE MONEY!!!

I was very fortunate that when I graduated from high school, all the top students in the state were getting tuition waivers for any of the three big state schools (in Arizona). I was able to get a bachelors degree without it costing me anything.

so do you think doctors and funerals should be free. capitalism is also about competition, and it makes these industries better. i agree healthcare costs are out of control, but healthcare in this country advances at a phenomenal rate. because of people who care and yes, capitalism

Wow this is the first time I am reading this thread. I was deciding between UT, Dartmouth and Vanderbuilt. Looking at the tuition costs and putting my budget together was a nightmare. Then UH knocked on my door and offered me a full ride. That sealed the deal for me and I have never looked back. What an incredible decision and despite what the naysayers think, I had a quality education and maximized my university experience. It makes me nauseous just thinking about the kind of debt I would have incurred. I was so fortunate.

Apply for as much financial aid as you can. Student loans are the very last option.

Competition is a by-product. . .not the goal.
In Fact . . . modern capitalism is about stifling innovation
and seeking monopolistic goals than anything.

If you can stifle competition . . then you can keep R&D cost down
and you can add the savings to the bottom line. and believe
it is all about the bottom line.

Where does America stand on Healthcare world wide?
What does it mean to have the BEST HEALTHCARE . . . if no one can afford to use it?

Exactly, and too many Americans are one heart attack or one tumor or one car wreck away from utter financial ruin.

The outdated status quo public school /college education system needs to go. Education is what you make it.

Stuff like this is the direction to go for the future, not the subsidization of antiquated institutions.
