Wait a minute - 100% of the President's expenses are covered: housing, travel, food, etc. I don't see how taking a smaller salary is getting a taste of what it's like, given that his expenses are $0.

Ron Paul was right on everything about the economy for the past 30 years and we still paint him as a wacko?

Some people are just blind or want this country to be in a bigger **** hole than it already is.

Good news! At least some people have the integrity to admit they were wrong to support Obama and now understand that more government is not an answer. There is hope.

In theory I have nothing against presidents and congressmen making tons of money. They are put in place to run the biggest country in the world. They should be making a lot more than average Joes.

The problem is that they're making money and at the same time doing their best to run the country into the ground. I have a problem with them being horrible people who abuse their position for their own benefits, not how much they make.

If presidents, congressmen, judges, governors, etc. all make millions while smartly run the government efficiently and productively, I'd take that over the status quo.

Considering how much money it cost to run for President I doubt anyone is in it for the presidential salary. Anyway can make a pretty lucrative living after they leave office.

Considering that many CEO's have raked it in even while the company does terribly this isn't surprising in this day and age.

this video is quite telling. paul was spot-on regarding the economy, housing bubble, spending, debt, saddam and iraq, ect.

if people listened to paul and followed his advice we wouldnt be nearly as bad off as we are under the bush-obama madness. unfortunately, most people are just partisan hacks who are more interested in treating politics as a team sport. if "their" guy is doing it it is good - when its not "their" guy its bad.

republicans cheer their guy on when he spends more than all previous presidents combined and triples the size of the government and democrats cheer their guy on when he expands wars, caves in to wall street and the rich, expands the police state and clamps down on civil liberties.

juco-mamasan, you're not doing the Paulista side much justice.

A rant about central bankers, followed by the inevitable ascent up to the dais upon which the golden crown resides, is the standard talking point of 25-40 year old single males with some college or a bachelors degrees everywhere in this situation....the Ronvolution will not be televised!

Scoff at the 40K salary thing all you want, but there's something to be said for leading by example.

What example is this setting? That americans should take a pay cut? We have. That's the problem.

Some should. A couple of exceptionally overpaid folks abusing tax payer money, in particular.

Reminds me of how Rick Perry was renting out a mansion for $10,000 a month while telling Texans to "tighten their belts".

yeah....in the grand scheme of economic problems, "overpaid government workers" ranks about somewhere between infinitesimally small and utterly nonexistent. It's as about as big an isue as voter fraud.

Not singling out government workers, nor am I suggesting they are the problem. Was mainly thinking of CEOs who get millions in bonuses (enabled by taxpayer bailouts).

I think it is a noble gesture to not take an unnecessarily high salary as an elected government official, though. If you're stressing economic solvency and responsibility, it makes sense not to live in a mansion and get paid like a rockstar.

He's not leading by example. He isn't going to be President. I don't scoff at it, and it's fine for him to announce that he believes the President should only get 40K a year.

But if he was leading by example he would only take 40K a year for being a congressman. Instead he's proclaiming he won't lead by example now, but he will lead by example in the future if he gets elected President.

No....they, just desperately want the people in this country who really bust their asses working hard (along with the privileged) to fund the lives of those who simply won't. The culture of laziness is this country....in this world now....is simply ridiculous. The "American Dream" will never be attained on 40 hours a week with paid vacations, holidays and sick days, yet so many people want just this and can't comprehend why others have more.

As r****ded as the right has become, I'm so happy that Obama is the most liberal leader this country will, ever, ever, EVER have.
