At my job I have a room with no electrical outlet. I'm out in the field a lot so it usually isn't a problem but when I'm there, I need to charge my phone and laptop while I'm using it. There's an outlet in the hall with a two pronged extension cord running into my room but my laptop charger has three prongs. My manager said just use an adapter but I'm not sure how safe that is. The setup they're teling me to use on my personal stuff is: Outlet --> two pronged extension cable --> ground adapter --> my precious, precious stuff Changing rooms isn't an option so is this OK enough to keep my gear safe?
Outlet --> two pronged extension cable --> ground adapter ---> UPS --> my precious, precious stuff Also, I've seen Laptop AC adapters protect the hardware well on their own. I had an entire circuit go ballistic during some heavy construction on the power grid next door and fry anything that was plugged into the wall, 60-inch LCDs, PCs, Printers, Shredders, Monitors, Projectors...except the Laptops, which were on their AC adapters. I wouldn't trust that alone, but with the UPS I would feel safe, personally....that is, charging your phone through the laptop, as you stated earlier.
Ah yes. It does. Typical grounding issue. The third prong, or 'ground', in question brings added protection from electrical surges and things of the sort.
It doesn't ground the line at all. It's just the adapter that does 3 prongs to 2. The green ground would just be flapping in the breeze.
As much as I would like to get a UPS, I can't get that out of them, financially speaking that is, but I probably could get at least a 3 pronged cable out of them and maybe a surge protector. That could do the trick, right? True but in my case the only thing that it could connect to would be the plastic extension cord.
