Back in the 90's these were two players I admired for their hustle, defense, clutch shooting, and overall tencacity. They both flat out were not afriad of anyone. I wish there was more players these days like Mad Max and Starks who played with heart and fire on both ends of the floor. Today I see very few role players (or atleast players who are not considered all stars) who played with as much tenacity as these guys.

The question is who do you think is better between the two overall?

Also do you think these guys were as good defensively as guys like Kobe Bryant, Doug Christie, and Bruce Bowen are of today?

Jordan was a better SG defender than everone mentioned in this thread. Jordan also had more hustle, clutch shooting, and overall tencacity...on a more consistent basis.

Starks is not even in the same category as Vernon. Not only did Jordan not torch Max, if memory serves me well, the Bulls never beat the Rockets when Max was playing. Damn, I wish MJ never retired and the world could have seen the Rockets beat Jordan's Bulls in the finals.

Today's extinction of handchecking diminishes a defender's physical arsenal and today's extinction of trashtalking diminishes a defender's mental arsenal. It's tough to be a lockdown defender these days. I miss the old NBA. Now all I have is ESPN Classic.

I know Jordan got 55 on Starks once--but didn't Jordan also get 50+ points that one game against Mad Max when he was on Philly?

Also the question was who was better overall Starks or Max and is there defense as good as Bowen, Christie, and Kobe :D ?

When mad maxx was with us and a starter, He had alot more confidence and Was a great defender. When we got drexler, He couldnt except the backup role and thats when his career declined.

Max was a better defender. That guy was built and he could pop one over you no matter who you were.

They had looser defense rules back in those days. You could grab and hand check, and knocking a guy down the floor wasn't a fight starting offense...

Mad Max was 87 years old that game...i spoke to Martin Luther King, and Martin told me, "Mad Max was 107 years old when Jordan beat himi for 50"

So Invisible you saying Max and Starks would be nowhere if they defended with todays rules compared to Christie, Bowen, and Kobe?

Mad Max is the d'man! He saved our butts in 1994, Western Semi, game 3,
in Phoenix (Five 3-pointers in a row, plus 2 pointer after 2 pointer!).

Some Houston fans hate him. Not I.

Max was one of the best Rockets! I pick Max.

It was Max who brought us that first championship with the three. That ended it. He was great. He was cold blooded. And that was his ultimate downfall.

Ya know I can honestly say I dont hate Max. Before 1995, next to Hakeem, he was one of my all time fav Rockets. But after he walked out on this team like he did after the Clyde trade, well, thats hard to forgive.

What exactly is the definition of "hand checking"? Putting the hand on the defender as hes driving? If hand checking made it tougher to score than doesn't that make guards like Jordan, Drexler more impressive than guys like Kobe and T-Mac who don't have to deal with hand checking?

I agree about the handchecking rule put into place a few years ago. I know Mario Elie was already getting old when it was put in place, but it made it practically impossible for him to be as effective as he was when he was with the Rockets. I too miss the old days of the NBA. I loved the '94 finals. Classic.

Was handchecking just considered putting a hand on the defender as they make a move to the basket?

If so does that mean that Doug Christie, Kobe, Bruce Bowen are better defenders than Vernon Maxwell was?
