I'm in the office everyday before 6:00am, but I'm always out of the office everyday by 4:00pm.. When I worked for a university my oddest time to come in was 12:00am and work till 6:00am..
At my first real job I was getting paid squat since I never graduated college/didn't have a degree, so I made it a point to teach myself anything and everything I needed to gain knowledge, understand our application, environment, calculations, technology, etc. This meant 8 hour workdays were laughable. At that job I would work 12-13 hour weekdays, then on weekends I'd go out with friends to Hooters. Around midnight-1am, I'd leave them and head back to work. I'd work from 1am til 5-7am Sunday mornings. I don't know if that means I'm a late worker or early worker, though... It was worth it! *EDIT* : Oh yeah, I used to work graveyard shift for Walmart and RPS unloading 18 wheelers and loading delivery trucks. The Walmart job was from 10pm - 7am, I think. The RPS job was from 3am to 7 or 8am, I believe.
We were having a sales conference and I was charged with creating CDs to archive all the presentations everyday. The conferences didn't end until like 9 every night, I had to wait for the presentations to be sent to me, put them in the correct branded template and then put them on the ISO I was creating. So I ended up staying in my office 3 nights straight. I mean sleeping in my office!!! The company had showers and such there, we had TV and internet radio, but it was a bit surreal.
Dude, I don't wake up until 8 every morning...Work is just 5 minutes away...Gotta luv it... Well, this week I got to work at 8 one day...I was charging my phone and it puts the ringer on loud...Well, i sent a joke last night and he calls me at f'n 7 am. dick ) I didn't answer it, but it was on the other side of the room and I couldn't shut it off...Couldn't go back to sleep so I came in...
I can relate... I normally come in at 7, but if something f***s up, I could be here at any time, any day.
THREE O-F#(*&#$(&*#)@ING'CLOCK! Dang hardware peeps... can't they do this at the normal maintenance time? Effers. This is a brand new EARLY-TO-WORK record.
^ What, construction ? Heck no, I mow lawns, wash dishes at a restaurant, work in maintenance at a high-rise, wash cars at Bubbles, and am a nanny for a top executive like Ahnold ! I am your country, takin' yer yorbs! Was that YOU coming out of the club as I was going in (*that's what SHE thought)?
A couple of weeks ago I had to "host" a telepresence call with our UK office. That call started 9am... UK time, meaning I had to be in the Houston office at 3am to start. Since I live just under an hour away even in the most ideal of traffic times... I had to leave my house at 1:45am. I didn't even risk going to sleep beforehand. Thankfully that isn't a common occurrence and in fact most days I work from home. I am an early riser anyway (in part because my oldest daughter needs to get up at 5:30am to get ready for school), so I usually start working before 7am everyday.
6am on a Friday to do server work? Whoever is in charge of that needs a swift kick in the arse. What happens if something goes wrong and it's down for the work day? Server stuff should be done on the weekend, at night, in my professional opinion. Leaving for work is sweet on the traffic side. Makes you wonder why you don't do it daily. About once a month I have to commute across from one side of Fort Worth to the other side of Dallas, about 110 miles. I usually leave at 4:30am. It's the only time that I can figure that won't kill me on traffic. I make it in about 90 minutes, do my work, then mosey home. Back to the original question...one of my first jobs ever was making biscuits at McDonalds. Had to be there at 4:30 am for minimum wage, every day (this was in the summer). Didn't last long. To this day I would have to say that was the lousiest job I've ever had.
At my old job I used to go whenever I felt like going in, but now usually I go in by 9.15. I think the earliest I have been there is like 8.15.
No, not really. I work at a higher education institution. Among other things, I handle Linux-based servers of web-based course tools, so students are usually working in those at night, mostly, and we cannot afford to have them down even on the weekend. The agreement with our Faculty and the students has already been set and has been like this for years since I've been here. It is understood that they cannot expect them to be up 100% all the time. There has to be a "refresh" or an "upgrade" time, else we couldn't even keep them working. Yes, there have been problems during the day and we've solved them quickly. Having down time is unacceptable, for the students are paying and their education depends on our systems, which we try to upgrade and maintain when they're at least use. We do this at least once or twice per semester.
