That sucks. Does that mean Philly gets his Bird Rights? ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
Juan...that means Smith loses his Bird rights. Smith cannot sign with anyone under a Bird exception. [This message has been edited by heypartner (edited November 09, 2000).]
Which team is the front runner in trying to get him? I heard that Miami was going to make a push to get him with the money they get via the Alonzo disability. ------------------ Titan's fanatic!!!! It was the first time the Titans sent an offense to the line of scrimmage with Eddie George in the backfield behind McNair to go with Wycheck at tight end and Carl Pickens, Kevin Dyson and Yancey Thigpen at wide receiver. So many choices, with a full season still ahead. "I think that might be scary for a defense," Dyson said.
HP, what I was referring to was Larry Coon's assertion (when the punishment first came out) that cancelling those contracts makes Philadelphia the last team Joe Smith had a contract with. And since he played for them for 3 years, they held his bird rights. When he signed elsewhere, they renounced him off their pay-roll, but that only negates his Bird Rights for a year. If he didn't sign anywhere else in that time, the team would be able to sign him to a Bird Contract again. Since his contracts with Min. never existed supposedly, then, in Coon's reasoning, he should be able to get a Bird contract with Philly. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
juan...that one is way beyond me then. Seems that would also mean Philly could sign and trade him, too. When is the last time Coon remarked about this. I just don't see it. I read this as Stern punishing the player as well as the team. If Smith keeps Bird Rights with any team, he is not really punished, is he? as he can still be sign-n-traded to any team then. no?
Smith was drafted by Golden State. He played for the Warriors for two full years. In 97-98, he played 49 games for Golden State and 30 games for Philadelphia. Then he went to the Timberwolves where he played the last two years. ------------------ "Play that funky music white boy." Six West Texansnet.com
Joe Smith played in 2 full seasons with Golden State, and started the 3rd season there, but was traded to Philly. Joe Smith Playerfile Damn, I forgot he was the first pick overall.... man there's a bust for ya'. ------------------ "I have a DREAM.........his name's Hakeem." DREAMer's Rocket Page
This was Coon's position two weeks ago. I don't know of anything more recent. http://www.sportstalk.com/nba/rumors/rumors_10-26-00.shtml "...........Smith Story Getting Wilder By the Hour UPDATED BELOW As teams already begin to jocky for Joe Smith, a dark horse may arise that no one is talking about at the moment. Larry Coon, who gives us expert advice on the Collective Bargaining Agreement from time to time, believes that, given David Stern's ruling, the Philadelphia 76ers may hold Joe Smith's bird rights. Remember, Smith decide to forgo his Bird rights two years ago and signed with Minnesota for their mid-level exception. With Smith's current and prior two contracts erased from the history books, guess which team becomes Joe's 'prior team?' Philadelphia. Could the 76ers either sign Joe Smith to a MAX deal or do a sign-and-trade? Larry thinks so. 'As I read the rules and interpret 'voiding' Smith's contract (and if my interpretation is incorrect, then voiding the previous contracts is both pointless and senseless, so I'm pretty confident about my interpretation), Philadelphia now meets all the criteria for having Smith's Bird rights.' We talked to several league sources who were skeptical. They felt that though technically this may be correct, Stern would not allow it. Which, of course, means a lengthy appeal, something Smith and his agent Dan Fegan want to avoid. Coon doesn't think Stern would have a leg to stand on. 'In voiding Smith's previous two contracts, Stern 'used' the definitions in the CBA to create a situation which would deprive Minnesota of their Bird rights to Smith. How then could they also prevent another team from using those exact same defintiions? If the rules deprive Minnesota of Smith's Bird rights, then those same rules also hand them to Philadelphia. It's either both, neither, or hypocrisy. As I read the rules, Philly gets his Bird rights.' UPDATE: Since our report several people have asked about the fact that the Sixers RENOUNCED Joe Smith. Russ Granik, in a teleconference today said the Sixers no longer had his rights because they renounced Smith two years ago. However, according to Larry Coon, renouncement gives up a team's rights to use the Bird exception on the player for one year only. That one year is passed. Quoting the CBA (Article VII Section 4(g) (relevant part only): 'From the date of such renounciation until the following July 1, the player's prior team will only be permitted to re-sign such player with room (i.e., the team cannot sign such player pursuant to [a Bird exception]) or pursuant to the minimum player salary exception." When Smith was traded, his Bird rights went with him. Since apparently the league is saying the Smith's time in Minnesota didn't happen, Philly should still have his Bird rights. ------------------ Who would've thought Don Nelson would pass up Olumide Oyedeji not once, not twice, but thrice?
If the time in Minnesota didn't happen, then his years of service in the league would be reduced also. I doubt if Stern meant that. The NBA probably wants a middle ground on the issue in which his years of service in the league still counts, yet he has to start fresh in building his Bird Rights. Larry Coon can probably quote the CBA as well or better than Stern and found a technicality that the NBA didn't contemplate. Stern has to come up with a new angle to close the loophole that Coon found. Bet on Stern to prevent Smith from having Bird Rights with Philly. Mango ------------------ Test Your NBA Trade Ideas 1. If I was Smith I'd got to Miami a Good fit for him He'd play center though Rocket River ------------------
Why havent i heard anything from the Minnesota camp? Wouldnt the players on the team feel like he owes them another season since he virtually help screw the organization for years. Or even say that when they see him again on another team that he'd better watch out. Stuff like that is something im suprised i havent seen or heard about yet. I even wonder if he feels guilty? ------------------
glen taylor took all blame for the deal. If someone came to you and said that they have a way you could get over 90 million over 10 years would you say yes? probably. Joe is definitely at fault for accepting the deal, but it is as much or more mr. taylors fault.
Actually, the team is backing Smith "a thousand percent" according to Garnett. They want him to end up wherever is best for him. They all know they would have (or actually have) done the exact same thing in Smith's place. He and his agent were doing exactly what they should all be doing; except he got caught. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
