Not really twitter, but basically I want to set up a text service where I can send a text to number and some computer will process it and then reply back to me. Like you can text apartments and they will reply to you. Does anyone know how much this costs to set up?

twitter is extraordinary is how successful they have been on the simplest amount of coding ever. I am continually amazed why people use it. If you were to say to VCs back in 1998 at the beginning of the bubble that you wanted to create a company that allowed people to post 150 character text messages and share them...they'd laugh you out of the room.

that said, why not just you Twitter? Are you actually trying to create a site that is Twitter/craigslist but focuses just on real estate.

I would unsafely assume creating a website that allows for automated responses from businesses and whatnot would cost a lot to start up, but not a lot once it got going. Just have to make sure you get sponsors and advertisements.

    Kinda like ChaCha?

You can text questions to their service and they answer them with computer/human answers depending on the question.

Exactly but how much does it cost to do that. I just want some thing simple. Like for example I can text a code to my computer and then it would return my current ip address.

Hire a web developer on one of the freelancing websites. Its not going to be cheap, any competent developer will charge over $50-$60 an hour for their services, maybe more. I have no idea on how the site would be programmed, so I cant give you a rough estimate, its going to be at least a couple grand though.

Unless you spam your site with ads; or are largely successful like Twitter or Tumblr you won't make money.

It isn't maxing out currently, but that is the maker's choice. It makes money from selling "sponsored tweets."

It is worth billions of dollars (they have been offered a buy out for a few billion a few years back and turned it down).

I'm pretty sure there are millions of ways to monetize it, but they are trying to make the best way which does not overwhelm their site/user with ads.

Yep, it is the bell of the ball, something that took a small amount of another app and made it for the masses.

You will have to hire some talented people if you don't have the tech expertise.
