Hey guys, my dad recently offered me a trip to NY for my 21st birthday. So we'll be going there together in a couple of months.

I've been there about 3 years ago with the rest of my family, and we did all the tourist stuff, so this time around i'm looking to see some stuff that are less "touristy" and more "true ny culture".

Places to shop, eat, go out and of course visit. Sports will obviously be included, but it doesn't take a scientist to figure out how to find these so i'm set on that level.

    Any suggestions would be great!

    Thanks!

I was just in NYC for a little over 2 weeks, these are some of the restaurants I enjoyed

    Avra near Lexington and 48th
Mesa Grill near 5th Ave and 15th
Sarabeth's near Madison and 92nd (couple other locations but this is the best one)
Pomodoro Rosso near Columbus and 71st

Those are of various pricing, attire, and locations

get beat up, have a crazy person pee in your subway car right in front of you, get mugged in the subway station, give and get a mean look from the person walking in your direction on the sidewalk, and get arrested for no reason

Go to Victor's Cafe in Manhattan and order the Ropa Vieja (its like $30 for the plate). But I will guarantee that you will have an orgasm in your mouth.

Check out Williamsburg - which is a neighborhood in Brooklyn with lots of restaurants and bars. You can take the ferry across from Manhattan for $4. On the weekends they have an outdoor food court called Smorgasburg which is really awesome - all sorts of restaurants open up stalls and sell their signature items.

There's also a mobile web app you can use to find the best places there - www.HelloDomino.com

been living here over a year now, honestly too many good places to eat at to count, and i still have not been to all of the places I want to go. However depending on where you stay i would just d/l the yelp app if you have an iphone and just search restaurants by location. Some of the places I take my out of town visitors are:

53rd and 6th or "chicken and rice"
Levain's bakery for their choco chip cookies
Biryani cart for their chicken tikka with rice and their amazing kati rolls
Shanghai cafe for their soup dumplings
St. Marks Place which is a street with tons of japanese restaurants
Korea Town which is on 32nd st. between 5th and 6th
    Shake shack for their burgers
    Ippudo for their ramen
Eataly for their ridiculous collection of italian goods and eateries inside
SoHo for their shopping. Stands for South of Houston st. (pronounced HOUSE-ton) I know, ridiculous
Little Italy, just to walk through; it really is a tourist trap now.
NYC pizza (many restaurants located throughout city and the different boroughs)
Catch a Yankees game in their new stadium
Catch a Giants game in their new stadium
if you are into Museums theres the MoMa and the Met just to name a few of the powerhouses here
Nothing beats a walk in Central Park though
Fine dining is pretty epic in the city: dont know what your budget is but i would recommend to splurge at least on one meal. Just google Michelin stars NYC and go to any of the restaurants listed. You'll pay about $100/person/star with a max of 3 stars possible

And i can go on and on..but thats what came to mind immediately..Everywhere is accessible by train (subway)

was there visiting my sister a few weeks ago. we spent a lot of time in soho and the west village, tons of restaurants and bars and most were very reasonably priced. we far preferred low-key bars/lounges as opposed to pricey clubs so i dont have much in the way of recommendations there, but a few cool spots:

sweet n vicious - cool bar in soho that poured cheap and stiff drinks
spring lounge - divey bar w a great jukebox also in soho. felt like a college bar.
freemans - great restaurant at the end of an alley in soho. really cool place that was reasonably priced. plan on making reservations though.
stanton public - another cool divey bar in soho w a decent outside area. great beer selection.
bowery electric - multi-storied dance club w 80's hits, 90's hits, etc. not a trendy type club but pretty popular and a lot of fun.
topaz thai - tiny thai restaurant on 56th in midtown. probably the best thai food i've ever had.
wilfie & nell - really cool and tiny restaurant in the west village that ew stumbled upon sunday morning... had a great a very well priced brunch
the standard biergarten - meatpacking district, awesome open air biergarten underneath an overpass next to the standard hotel. communal seating, $8 big-ass beers (you pay w a ticket system), tasty sausages and pretzels. the place was packed on a saturday afternoon but was a lot of fun.

those are the places that really stood out. have fun... nyc is a kickass city. i'll be visiting often.

Yes go to Halal guys! They have like 3 stands, get the lamb w/ red sauce and pita ask for white sauce

Also, the subway is the best way to get around IMO.

At night - go to the Standard Hotel and party it up there.

Ask to get into the Boom Boom room

Damn, everybody was there last month, I was there for 10 days

I'd add Beer Gardens in Astoria since your turning 21, cool place to chill, drink, and eat at.

Hot Jumbo Bagel on the upper east side. I think 56th and 2nd? They are the best bagels you will ever eat.

    Grimaldi's pizza is good.

Any of the little pizza joints tend to be really good to be honest.

PMFT. The Garden(and the knickerbockers) are overrated. MSG only good for boxing.
