Wow! Just a year ago 610 and 1560 had the most talent on air and 790 looked to be on the way out. Then the Matt & Adam signing by 790 and now Lance! Damn how quickly the forecast has changed.
I think Lance said it best one time that he compared Houston local sports radio to wrestling. It's like WCW NWO era and WWE Attitude era, people jumping ship to other stations and it's a big storyline that the smarks follow.
In the Houston Chronicle today, they said that Lance was working without a contract for sometime: I wonder if that last sentence allows Lance to jump ship without violating a non-compete. If he technically didn't have a contract, maybe he can start on say Monday. Or maybe, if he technically was not under contract for say x months, he has satisfied his non-compete clause by not appearing on another radio station in the market for a period of x months after his contract expired.
No doubt. 790 was on life support before landing Matt and Adam and Matt Thomas and now they are the unquestioned #1 station in town. 610 will still get the ratings because they are the most well-known station among casual listeners, but the real listeners know who the best is.
Hmm....makes me wonder who their GM is at 790. Maybe he can call Morey and show him how to reel in the big fish.
Lance with Wex would make the most sense. Wex doesn't go for the joke all the time and would be great straight man for LZ. MattJ can handle a show by himself, has the chops for it. Mighty Gwinn needs to go. MT is listenable, which is something I never would've thought back when he was Dan Patrick's version of JFizzle.
Interesting point of view. I don't see it happening since MattJ and Wex have great chemistry and recently got together on 790. If this was 5 years down the road, I'd agree with you there. Doubt it'll happen today. I don't know about you guys, but to me, the drive time with Charlie P is the best show to listen. And unfortunately, his voice can lull me to sleep. Maybe pairing him up with LZ wouldn't be so bad on the drive time home, but looks like most of the bbs thinks Charlie P is better off solo.
He is better off solo. I think most drive-home shows should be mainly about recapping the big sports news of the day, and fielding callers, which doesn't require more than one person. Plus, Charlie would continue to make his partner seem inferior... just as he did with Rich. Doesn't matter that Rich makes himself look inferior. The morning and mid-day shows carry a different dynamic... as you don't have as many callers available, and the news of the day is not final. Matt Thomas, even though he is by himself, relies a lot on the banter between him and whoever else is there in the booth (control guy?). There just aren't as many calls to field... other than those idiot Titan fans that are unemployed and have nothing better to do than bash Texans and still root for VY. Also, placing Lance in the 10-12 spot (the one currently employed by DG) would be a pseudo-waste of his talents. They could come up with some hybrid MT/LZ combo that spends part of the time together, and then part of the time separately. Also, they could just keep LZ as a rover... having FFB segments for the AM and drive time for hour-long segments, and have him strictly be an NFL guy with a MMQB hour-type segment.
JG was the perfect partner for Lance. Played the straight man perfectly and had no morals to try to stop some borderline bits. Hopefully they are reunited.
I think they're going to do Matt, Adam, and Lance. I'm calling it now. Not sure how long term it'll be, but I think that's where they stick him now. At least on a part time basis, particularly with football season here.
The Astros are on 740, which is a sister station of 790, but your point is taken. During Texans and Rockets (the other team 610 has) season, their ratings go up.
omg. I mostly listen to 790, but I don't know that 'serious REAL sports radio listener' is a bragging point. Eh, I'd rather it be a good mix, plenty of info, entertaining, etc. etc. Generally a topic will take over anyway, but I don't mind mixing it up a bit.
I'm not suggesting it is. I'll admit that my interest in local sports radio is over the top, particularly when it comes to keeping up with who is moving where. It's just that ratings likely won't reflect how much better 790 when compared to 610.
This is one reason why I respect what Matt does so much. The guy is entertaining when there's hardly anyone calling in, and many of the ones that do call in are single-cell organisms. An example of why he's so good at this is when he was briefly replaced by Craig Roberts during that time. Poor Craig seemed like he was about to jump out of the window with the lack of callers, and he wasn't very good ad ad lib from what I was hearing. Those few days were some of the worst hours of sports talk I've ever listened to (and I liked Craig when he was KPRC's sports anchor back in the day). The guy MT has the banter with (more like, the guy he batters) is Ross Villarreal, the producer, btw. Those two work together pretty well, but I think that's more MT than anything.
What?!?!?! After today I thought the clamour would be for J Solomon to have his own show. . . . Rocket River BWHAHAAHABWBWHABHWHA
KBME is the no 1 ranked station from 6am-7pm. The only thing that 610 beats 790 in is the drive home and 7-11pm time. I think while charlie is super knowledgeable I just don't feel the connection with the fans that a guy like lance Z has. Plus I think Lance's actual X O knowledge is superior to Charlie and he can provide insight were charlie just regurgitates facts. I think teaming them together would be kind of weird, but it might work. I just can't listen to charlie for like an hour since he relies on the callers. So many of these calls are just so bad. "What do you think about the texan's secondary and I''ll hang up and listen." This has been asked a million times. And I think charlie needs some of this: <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OYpIQhPBIqw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
