When Patrick "Gold Club" Ewing retired this summer, there was wall to wall Ewing retirement mumbo jumbo everywhere on ESPN.com and cnnsi.com and everywhere else in the media. Now that Olajuwon is officially retiring, where's the respect? Not only was he a better player than Ewing, he was THE center for the late 80s and early-mid 90s, and at least top 10, if not top 5, all time. Who else schooled Robinson, Ewing, and Shaq in the playoffs? Good luck trying to find even 1/10th the coverage Ewing got. I guess he might have gotten better press coverage if he was a thug with a bad attitude like Ewing, or had his ass handed to him by Jordan repeatedly like Ewing.
Good points, frankly. Tho The Dream is getting love on espn classic. Do you seriously want to place the blame? Aim it directly at the second level performance of the Houston Rockets' PR department! They should have set the agenda for the national response.
I'm glad to see he's getting a little love somewhere, but being relegated to ESPN classic is like getting a footnote on a 5 line article on the back page of the Sports section. I think it may have more to do with not being a Knick or Laker than anything.
RELEGATED to ESPN Classic? That's why it's called CLASSIC. It's SUPPOSED to be there, because the games were played a long time ago. He's getting about eight hours of coverage. I would hardly call that a slap in the face. Ewing didn't get any coverage on ESPN Classic, if I remember correctly. You should be thankful that you get the opportunity to see all that classic footage of Hakeem...
Good point A-train, it is great to be able to see the footage. But the point I am making is that ESPN, CNNSI, etc. made it out like the greatest player that ever played was retiring when Ewing retired, and they were going on for practically 2 weeks about it. My point is that I am a bit surprised not to see as much "front page" type coverage by the national media. ESPN Classic is a sports enthusiast's site, ESPN.com is mainstream. There were at least 4 major articles a day for 3 or 4 days about Ewing. Olajuwon is retiring TOMORROW, not in a month or something. I have seen one mainstream ESPN major article about it so far.
