Trade Tracker: Deadline deals and analysis Jeff Passan, Yahoo Sports Atlanta ACQUIRED Michael Bourn Houston ACQUIRED Jordan Schafer, Brett Oberholtzer, Paul Clemens, Juan Abreu ANALYSIS: The Great Astros Purge of ’11 continues with Atlanta’s thieving Bourn for Schafer and three prospects. None of the four project as anything more than mediocre big-league regulars. Bourn, in the meantime, is among the game’s three best defensive center fielders and is primed to lead the league in steals for the third consecutive season. He should hit free agency at 30 after next season and smash Juan Pierre’s record for undersized-speedster contract. In the meantime, he’s a perfect fit atop an Atlanta lineup that remains vulnerable to left-handers.
Yes I watched the Astros Insider with Lee all happy on his farm too, doesn't mean he wouldn't agree to a buyout and land with an AL team. I'm sure he's rich enough to hire workers to tend to his farm while he goes out and earns another 20 mil. When your team starts talking to you about a buyout, your not gonna feel very wanted. Then, he will be looking over and seeing Martinez, Michaels, Bourgeois waiting and he'll know that they know he's screwing them over. So yes, I do believe Lee will accept a buyout next year
Yikes. If this is the return for him, I would have rather held onto him. Yes, I know the owner wanted to cut payroll, that doesn't make it a good deal.
Flipped to the Braves game a couple of minutes ago, and heard the news. I can't believe how awful a trade this is. To not get one of those top 4 guys is ridiculous. Wait until the offseason if you can't find a better offer than that.
Of course Wade would follow up one of the best trades he's ever done with one of the worst... Nothing more to say. It's ****ing Ed Wade. Hope Jim Crane doesn't keep him around like the Cubs did with Jim Hendry when changing ownerships.
As soon as Bourn hired Boras as his agent, he was getting traded. Boras is going to steer him elsewhere and they wanted to get something for him. Unfortunately, the return is getting flat reviews initially.
Because there would be more teams involved, and longer to wait them out. An offer this low would have been available between now and July 31, 2012. The Astros gave up their best player, for players I would have expected in a deal for Clint Barmes.
Just because more teams could have bid doesn't mean they would have bid. Plus, Bourn only a 1 year rental this off-season than an 18 month rental right now. Then suppose Wade is fired this off season like most expect, everything will be delayed until Crane fills in his new front office, and no one knows if other teams will be willing to be the first team to deal with at the new GM or not. Not saying they absolutely should have done this trade. We don't know any of the details of these prospects and the negotiations, but it is an assumption that waiting until the off-season was best.
Why can't people be optimistic? Other than JT, every other prospect is a gamble. Also, just 2 years ago Shaefer was a top 25 prospect. Things change quickly. I read somewhere that when the braves got Tyler Pastornicky that they must have known something that the Jays didn't know. Be optimistic.
This seems kind of contradicting. How would the team get more for him in the offseason or before next year's deadline, when the length of club control will be even less? Why would he even accept arbitration no matter how much he's offered when he has Boras as his agent? Is even considered an elite player? Defense yes, offense not so much. This team is bad...really, really, really bad. Any deal improves us. I commend the organization for seemingly going hard for some top-notch talent. But if this is what they could get, so be it. This organization needs any talent right now, and lots of it.
You'd expect four players, including two top 10 prospects from a very deep farm system, plus a near league-average CF for Clint Barmes? I get the frustration, but perspective.
