I don't know that Schafer is a fizzled prospect either...my understanding is he had an injury.

He's 24 years old. Not the kind of piece you add when you're contending...I don't understand your critique of that portion at all.

Here is the Baseball America 2011 Top 100 Prospects
    http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/2011/2611328.html

The Phillies had four players in the top 100 (4,39,56,70) of which we now have acquired two: Singleton at 39 and Cosart at 70.

The Braves had five players in the top 100 (5,17,35,37,86,93)......and they still have five in the top 100! How we can get two prospects from the Phillies on the Pence trade and none from Atlanta on the Bourn trade is idiotic.

As a 25 year old in Houston, Bourn hit .229 with a .588 OPS.
He would have had to have been considered a fizzled prospect at that point.

There is a reason these guys are rated as prospects in the first place. They have the tools in there. Bourn was able to figure it out after a disastrous first year in Houston. Maybe Schaefer figures it out after a poor, albeit not nearly as poor as Bourns's, year with the Braves.

I don't know what we were offered by other teams? do you??

because they were GOING to trade Bourn if the directive was to get under $60 million and add prospects.

You disagree with keeping a young gold glover that hits well and steals bases on the regular and has prolly ten good years left? His contract doesn't end til after next season, he'll get arbitration after this season. If Cranes so stuck on $60 million then how about he makes sure to buy out Lee before next season and 19 million would come off the books! I've respected your opinions b4 and I've been on here a long time, not posting too much though, but you got this one wrong max

I don't disagree with you re: draft being a crapshoot and this trade definitely could've been worse, but I guess my point is it definitely could've and should've been better had there been a better. How do I know for sure? I don't, except to compare Bourn's age, contract and accomplishments to those of others who have been traded at the deadline over the past couple of years and compare the haul.

This team definitely needs to rebuild, but as of now it reminds me more of the Pirates/Royals of the late 90's and early 2000s than the Marlins rebuilding process during the same era. Let's hope Schaffer stays healthy and thrives with a fresh start, and the others become serviceable major league starters or relievers.

I disagree on keeping a guy who has a big number coming if the owner says he wants the payroll under $60 million and the alternative is to trade a guy with a no-trade clause.

I'd love to keep Bourn and Pence. But when the owner says flip potential big contracts for prospects, you do that if you want to keep your job.

seems like quantity over quality for this deal. I would have hoped the astros could have gotten either a mlb ready #3 type starter or a further away prospect with elite level upside. Atlanta had multiple of both. I just don't see anyone like that in this deal. But bourn had to be moved and I'm sure this is the best Wade thought he could do, but I'm just surprised and disappointed at the return.

You're not buying out Lee. He'll sit on the bench and eat hot dogs if he has to.

Gold glove CF on worthless teams are meaningless and there is NO WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Carlos would accept a buy out. Best chance with him is hope he has a strong 1st half and deal him at the deadline next year.

He was rated the 25th best prospect prior to 2008, the 42nd best prospect prior to 2009, and the last three years his OPS at AAA has been .663, .509, and .633. He also has a suspension for HGH now.

I'm not saying you add 24 year old pieces when you're contending, in fact, the whole point is that he's not a piece at all. He's someone you take a flyer on and hope to get lucky. You don't take on players like that as part of a trade like this unless he's a throw in. He's someone you ship a player to be named for or cash or hope to sign him as a minor league free agent. We're basically doing the Braves a favor in taking Schafer because they would have just sent him back to AAA and released him eventually. This is taking Thabeet back as part of a trade for Luis Scola.

Ed Wade will not have a job for long. Crane's so intent on getting under $60 mil shows me that he isn't serious about winning when there is no salary cap, he also must not realize that Lee's contract is what is eating up the salary. I actually understood the Pence trade because maybe one day we might have a better right fielder than Pence. We will not find a better center, mark my words on that. Ten years from now we will all be saying, "Man I wish we would have kept Bourn somehow, no one has ever replaced him yet." I hope I'm wrong and i'll eat crow if I am, but I'm not! Ed Wade needs to go now and he will not be missed

Disappointed in this trade. Looked forward to getting at least ONE of their top pitching prospects.

Lots of people have bad rookie years. That doesn't necessarily make them a fizzled anything. When you have three years in a row that suck plus a drug suspension, that's a bit of a different story.

    1. If they could trade Lee, I have no doubt they would.

    2. Crane is taking over a franchise with a huge amount of debt and is coming off 100 losses with a below average farm system. Committing a bunch to the major league payroll isn't a smart move right now...they're not going to compete for the division next season.

    3. Ten years from now?? Really? Ten years from now, Bourn won't be playing any longer. Whether we replace him or not is not the issue. We're not going to be competitive now or next season...and we're not going to commit resources to a guy like that when we're on a pace to have our worst season in franchise history without much help at the farm.

Thabeet? Thabeet can't crack the roster. This guy will be our starting CF'er on August 11.

    richardjustice Richard Justice
Jordan Schafer will come off DL on August 11 and go into the starting lineup then.

You may be entirely right...but again...I have no idea what else was being offered by anyone else...do you?
