Why are you assuming they are not having dialogue right now? By all reports, it's pretty obvious they've discussed Pence trades with multiple teams. If you aggressively shop him, teams could possibly not put forward their best offer thinking you'll choose from the best of the worst. If you say we'll listen, they'll be more likely to up their offers to get you to deal him.

IMO, of course, but I think Wade is handling the Pence situation well. We'll see..

Max-- yeah, I know your kids like him. But I think they'll like Altuve as well.. and the next group of young guys that come up. I'm hoping for a #1 pick this year.. not as meaningful in baseball as other sports, but I'll take any small upgrade for our farm we can get at this point.

Not assuming they're not having dialogue (that would be stupid)--just pointing out that I don't see a problem with fielding a low-ball offer, as it's the beginning of dialogue.

Conversely, it's just as easy to assume that by doing nothing but saying "we'll listen" makes teams think you won't trade at all (which, "By all reports, it's pretty obvious" teams are thinking).

If no one was willing to offer enough for a guy under club control, I'm cool. But if the Astros pass on some good packages because he's the "face of the franchise", they're doing Pence, themselves, and all their fans a disservice.

no question about it. my older one constantly reads up on the farm system and was pumped about altuve starting last week.

pence sucks? and remind me how many world series we won with bagwell and biggio? guess their production technically meant all of nothing as well.

point was the team sucked. and, being an Astros fan from '94 through '06 was light years better than being a fan of the Pirates, Royals, Orioles, Blue Jays, etc., etc., and light years better than any of the Texans' futile existence to date.

So, technically, we disagree on what's meaningful.

Carr was actually a decent player, but not a franchise QB.

Just get serious about trading Pence already! If the Astros keep him, it gives me no motivation to watch or attend Astros games. Getting Brett Wallace last year made me watch them. Calling up Jordan Lyles got me to pay attention. Trading Keppinger and calling up Altuve is very productive and I find myself following him. The time for a youth movement is NOW! Don't waste anyone else's time please...we need prospects. I know it'll motivate me more to support the Astros.

I don't buy that for a second. Wandy's contract is perfectly reasonable for his production and age. Nothing more than a GM trying to get the Astros to either throw in some cash or reduce their prospect demands.

is it just me, or are anonymous gm comments annoying, old and ridiculous?

i was watching baseball tonight the other night, and tim kurkjian said "a higher up with one baseball team told me 'if the texas rangers trade for orioles reliever koji uehara, they have a great shot at winning the world series'."

great, great journalism, timmy. go back to geeking out about unusual stats and occurences.

Amen, man. I guess it's mostly Heyman pushing this stuff, but the amount of material out there implying that any contender would be doing the Astros a big favor to take Wandy off their hands is infuriating.

First there was espn, where gammons & others had to fill 5 minutes 3 times a week with whatever interesting tidbits they'd come across. Then there was the internet, guys had to fill 1 or 2 columns a week, then add in the ever-increasing ad-revenue driven impetus for page hits, so you had to have something/anything provocative. Then it was blogs, so you have have HAVE to be the first person with the scoop, doesn't matter if it's actually a scoop or not, just throw it out so if it's maybe correct you can say you "broke the story" and all the other blog folks would link to you & give you credit & shine your keyboard & ****; if it's wrong nobody will really care 15 minutes/hours/days/weeks later. Now you've got twitter and anybody/everybody can declare that INSIDE SOURCES SAY whatever the **** they want them to, as long as it gets the "journalist"'s name out there.

Just look at this board as an example. Any and every random ****ing thing that's reported anywhere is taken as god's gospel credible truth & then people go all apoplectic about it. It sucks. It makes this board almost unreadable at times.

So Pence is off the market huh???

“@ajcbraves: #Braves have not ruled out making offer for Hunter Pence, contrary to some reports.”

I'm really rooting for Beltran to get moved soon. I think as soon as he gets moved, the price for Pence will go up and teams will be more compelled to bowl the Astros over to get him.

I hope that rivalry devolves into "let's trade for the guy just so the other team can't".

I thought the Yankees were a good fit from the start since they have so many games against the Red Sox and their lefty-heavy lineup.
