I'm still pissed that I told my dad to throw away my old Apple //e back around 1998. I still have some disks with some of the programming I did on it as a kid. :(

BTW, I just found it humorous how if you go into GARM people talk about "1994" as if it was just yesterday or something so totally relevant to 2011, but you come in here and talk about the Internet in 1994 and people talk about it like the Dark Ages.

The internet really didnt hit it off until 1995ish. Windows 95 and AOL cd spam are what set the internet off.

We used to have compuserve as our internet provider on our old computer with windows 3.1. (I want to say it was one of those massive gateway towers with a 386 processor) I remember my dad brought home a US Robotics 28.8 modem (which was top of the line at the time). Also I never had AOL at any point. However, I find it fascinating that AOL had such a huge grip on the market that tv and radio ads would list both the web address and the AOL keyword. Pretty crazy that a browser had its own keyword system and people had to advertise for it.

The one thing I really remember about the internet was preventing anyone from making or receiving phone calls while I sat and stared at the computer for 20 minutes as I got a busy signal over and over. And then 15 minutes into being on the internet you got kicked off and had to spam dial again until you got through.

In reality though I was only a kid and had nothing to do on the internet. Although one of the first websites I ever regularly trafficked was NBA.com after I saw them advertise it in a commercial. Plus my parents didnt let me go into chatrooms so I usually logged in to check sports scores and then got off.

I remember all the fights with my parents because I wanted to get in the internet, but they were expecting a phone call, or that I could only get online at night, so the phone were free during the day.

and this sound brings memories:

I recall playing the original Warcraft (not a role playing game) and Doom online vs. friends. Well, it was only 1 vs 1 through the modem. I'm not sure if that was the internet or what, but it happened in the early/mid 90's, around the time of prodigy, compuserve, aol.

Once high speed internet became popular, the internet became a vital part of most people's lives. I can't remember when we got our first modem. I know we didn't get high-speed until 2003.

I first got online back in the mid 90's. I remember in 1996 I got a new machine that was a Pentium 133 Mhz with 16 MB of RAM, a 28.8 modem, and 2 GB of Storage. I thought that thing was a monster :). As soon as I got it I was interested in ways to upgrade it, and that's what started my IT career.

My first email address was on Juno. It required that you insert their floppy disk and dial into their service anytime you wanted to access your email. It's really amazing how far we've come in only 15 years.

I remember I was able to get cable Internet in the late 90s early 2000s. It was so much better than dial-up. :)

My Dad was waiting for the next best thing back then...as far as when to get a computer. Boy, did he lose by choice. He chose the IBM PC Junior. That thing was a piece of crap and it seemed like it was obsolete in the time it took to unpackage it. My first real computer was a 486/25.

I was in high school when the first and second gen Apple computers started coming around. I can still remember the text-based internet in the early days.

I graduated with a MIS degree in 1995. It was the perfect time to start a computer career and I moved on from batch mainframe programming to web-based programming in 1999.

I couldn't imagine having to graduate and find a job in today's market. What a stinker!

I remember during the Rockets 2nd championship run, before there was any binding "security" on the internet, I used to navigate to ESPNs fledgling website daily and change the title to RocketsChampionshipRun.com...
