Forget the 04 Pistons, the Rockets may look more like the 90s Pacers

Yes and No. Perfect match? Of course not. Patterson actually has an offensive game and a more cerebral player than Davis. But I agree that he doesn't have that meaness Davis had.

But consider the metagame of basketball from the 90s to today. The game has become more guard oriented and less physical. So I don't see the dropoff as a factor. By today's standard, Patterson's game is plenty tough, and his defensive tenacity looks quite good. OTOH, the ability to space the floor is more important today than in the 90s. So overall, I think the comparison is apt. You just have to adjust for era.

For real.... The Davis boys were throwback players... I like PPat but he's no Dale Davis.... And Morris game isnt anywhere near Antonio's as far as physicality... Mark Jackson didnt force much but was a great floor general.... Smits was above 7 ft and physical enough... Only good comparison is Reggie Miller and KMart...

Your Miller/Martin comparison seems to be the one I agree with the most, mainly because it's the one where we have the most data from which to pull. The otheers, obviously, are more projections, even Lowry/Jackson, since Lowry's only been a starter for not even a full season.

Well, they did go to the Finals once, and were a fixture in the conference finals & semi-finals for years. That is much better than mediocre.

While of course the goal is to win a championship, there is some degree of luck involved, and the most you can ask is to have a legit shot at a title, which the Pacers did for several years.

    Word.

People seem to have this "if this move doesn't make a title contender, it's garbage" attitude.

I'm completely satisfied with being competitive while we search for our next superstar.

If Yao were healthy, he would be a better comparison to Rik Smitts than Donatas. Donnie is more of a really tall SF than a center.

    Who needs a center anyway?

3 PFs on the floor at one time should fill the gap.

    Heh heh heh ... :(

I agree. Especially since they faced bulls with jordan in the conf. finals and semifinals in the east, and then they faced lakers with kobe & shaq in their prime. also I dont think its mediocre losing to such dominant teams.

Good comparison. I think we need another veteran SF on the team that is defensive minded and who also possesses some usable offensive skills in a half-court set. I would like to see us package together Jordan Hill, Terrence Williams, Jonny Flynn and maybe even the 2 players with non-guaranteed contracts and trade them to the Pistons for Tayshaun Prince(sign and trade). We can start him at the 3, but I'd prefer Chase as the starter and let Prince come off the bench. Maybe we don't have to trade for him since he is a free agent, but we have to get rid of folks somehow.
That said, we could start Prince and sport a second team/bench squad of PG Goran Dragic, SG Courtney Lee, SF Chase Buddinger, PF Pat Pat, and PF-C Don Motie . Together that would be an offensive force, with enough quickness and length to play defense and create turnovers, leading to fast-break highlights and quick timeouts for the opposition. 4 of them can stroke 3's and 2Pat can nail jumpers from everywhere else. All of them appear to be willing passers too. Whoever is open, take the shot. Prince could start at the 3 for defensive purposes and he could still post up every now and then to take advantage of a mismatch like Battier used to. I'm really not sure where Marcus Morris fits in, maybe he can be our Battier-defense replacement at the 3 spot, with more o-fense of course. That would be great starting or coming off the bench.
I'm also not as worried about getting a center as everyone else is on these blogs. It would be nice, no doubt, to have a center with shot blocking skills, but who can we get? Samuel Dalembert - No! Too old, little to no offense and he'd probably get dunked on more often than not. DeAndre Jordan would be my top choice for a center followed by Przbilla(is he healthy?), Spencer Hawes, ...seriously who could the Rockets possibly get for a center on the free agent market. Nene, Gasol, Chandler, or Jordan would be top choice, but all seem out of the Rockets reach. That leaves us with Nenad Krstic, Kyrylo Fesenko, Aaron Gray, and Hawes to choose from. I'd more than likely pass on all of them.
I do like the team we have, we just have to trim the fat a bit and someone needs to light a fire under Thabeet's lower back side area.

I'm thinking we have a sacramento team like the one with Divac at center, stojakovic at shooting guard, and webber at PF. white chocolate was the point guard. that would compare to us starting Montiejunas at center, scola, Morris, martin, and lowry. Lowry is a beter shooter than J will. Morris at small forward would be better than Doug Christie too. Even when they got Mike Bibby at point - I'd take Lowry over Bibby. Good Enough to take the Lakers to game seven and this time no Horry to knock us out! This time around we'd have to deal with Dirk jackin 3's....aww cr*p

This lineup has me excited, but I don't think the 3, 4, and 5 spots are a great comparison with that Pacers team. This lineup does, however, have the potential for greatness IF Morris can really guard 3s and D-Mo can learn to hold his own in post defense. Obviously, we'd need to help on big 5's with a post game, but there aren't many of those anymore. Meanwhile, those 5's would have to chase our guys on the perimeter too, which could become a matchup nightmare for the other team. It could really open up the floor. We'd have to get a lot of rebounding from Morris to make it work.

I guess the KMart/Reggie comparison is apt, and maybe the Lowry/Jackson, but the rest is kind of off unless Yao comes back. The Davis were both PFs. Dale was more of a rebounder/defender than an offensive guy; his foul shooting was one of the worst ever. Tony Davis was more skilled than Dale but more emotional and streaky. Neither of them could guard Shaq, but not many could back then.

I never felt that Jackson would put his team over the top, however, too methodical and his extra gear (like Stockton's) was still no match for players who were more physically gifted than him.

Those Knicks/Pacers series were still great, tho. Where's pacer12 when you need him?
