Brown gave me a tour of Toyota Center, including the Rockets training room, locker room and practice court. In the locker room, the equipment manager left a pointed message on the dry-erase board for a couple of players who didn’t clean up after themselves.

Brown and I talked about the recent NBA finals and how it’s just not as fun to watch when the Rockets aren’t involved. He told me his daughter was rooting for the Miami Heat because she had a crush on Dwyane Wade. His daughter just happened to be in the building and I tried to talk her out of that crush, but she wasn’t budging.

During the tour, Brown mentioned that “coach” was working out a few players and we peeked in to see Hall of Famer and new Rockets head coach Kevin McHale working out Patrick Patterson. Patterson had a strong rookie year so it was impressive to see him putting in work with the new coach in the offseason.

When Brown mentioned “coach,” I immediately thought of Rick Adelman, the team’s coach the past four seasons, so it was odd to see the 6-foot-10 inch McHale on the sidelines.

While I was interviewing Brown in a boardroom overlooking the practice court, Brown brought Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey out of the draft room, where he was scouting picks for the upcoming June 23 NBA draft, and he asked if I had any questions from a fan’s perspective.

So why did he hire McHale, who has coached less than 100 NBA games, as the new coach?

Morey admitted that McHale wasn’t a frontrunner when the coaching search began, but explained that the endorsements from his former players put him head and shoulders above the other candidates.

Every single one of the players said they loved playing for him,” he said. “They all said that he put them in positions where they could succeed and he got on them when they needed it.”

Morey promised the Rockets will play much better defense in the upcoming season and lamented some of the close losses the Rockets suffered last season due to defensive lapses.

when someone asked who will benefit most from hiring mchale, my answer is pat. pat can be an elite pf if he can master low post moves. pat has bball IQ, work ethic, and dedication to be an player on both ends. he is the one who, i can see, will improve most.

I was the one that started where is Kevin Mchale thread I want to apologize this is what I was looking to hear. Now honestly I still have expectations for Jordan Hill and Thabeet, hope those guys have been putting in work as well. I guess this is why Patrick Patterson barring a injury should have a ten plus year NBA career. Way to go Patrick If he makes a huge jump to year to Scola probably will be on the block this season would hate to see Scola go though.
