I disagree. It may take a while, but I think social values evolve over time. Two hundred years ago, no one could've imagined a black president. There wasn't some repressed group that was out voting for black people for president. It was unfathomable. But slowly, people began to realize that black people are just regular people and we should treat them the same; each generation became more and more understanding and liberal on this issue until it became law. It took another 100 years or so for it to be fully fleshed (and some would argue there are still holdouts), but the social view on racial integration changed. You can see the same thing happening with gay rights, too. Slowly but surely, polls are becoming more and more in favor of gay marriage. It may take another generation or two, but eventually gay marriage will be standard for all states, if not implemented at the federal level. And it will be supported. Another example: legalization of mar1juana. This is still somewhat in its infancy, so it will be a while, but folks are becoming more and more liberal on this social issue as well. Eventually, I can see each state legalizing it. Ending the "War on Drugs" has become more and more popular by the year, and the younger generations support ending it more than the older generations. This will snowball every generation until it's completely legal and the view on its legality is standardized. Evolution isn't tied purely to biology, but society as well (in my opinion). There are tons of examples of this relative to what we can and can't do. As time wears on, I think people (in the United States, at least) become more liberal in their views. Of course, this is what history has shown me; you might have a different take on all this.
Wasn't there a Denzel Washington movie a few years ago about a father who took a hospital hostage to get his daughter a heart surgery?
Just to add another thought. This case shows that we already have a public option for health care for those who think we don't have socialized medicine.
In education, every citizen has access to the basic service and anyone that wants to pay for exceptional services has that option. It's hybridized socialism and it works pretty well.
