This is such a bizarre holiday outside of Texas. Why do 30+ states celebrate the day that Texas learned about emancipation?

Wasn't Texas the last state to hear about it?

I thought Texas was the last state to set slaves free or at least be "commanded" to do so. If that's the case, then I can understand why the last group set free is so important. As a people, you aren't really free until you're all free (even symbolically).

I never knew what Juneteenth was until I moved to Texas.

But it is also Father's Day, the 27th anniversary of the day Hakeem was drafted and my glorious birth.

In honor of the day I will share an excerpt from "Freedom's Plow" by the great African-American poet Langston Hughes.

    Well happy birfday, moes!

That's pretty sweet that all of that awesome crap falls on your bday. All I get is Gay Pride Day.

Thanks - I've read all sorts of links about it, but none of them ever mentioned that part. It's always just "when Texas heard about it". That would make it make more sense.
