My fiancée and I are trying to narrow down our honeymoon destination. So far, the best value is Punta Cana in Dominican Republic. But whenever we mention the Dominican Republic to people, they get this “oh crap that’s next to Haiti” attitude. Punta Cana is on the right coast of the Dominican Republic. Is it safe to go there for our honeymoon? If not, I’m open to suggestions. The wedding the first week of December
I'm strongly considering that for a honeymoon next summer as well. It's not on the list of US Travel Warnings, so I assume it is safe.
i've had a fantastic time in costa rica and tulum/akumal in mexico. both trips done on a budget, with easy flights from houston. costa rica: your choice of liberia or san jose. liberia to access the nicoya peninsula, san jose to access the mainland. tulum/akumal: as easy as flying into cancun, and hopping a shuttle (google around) or taking a colectivo bus (cheap, frequent, and safe enough, but a little longer) down the coast. i feel like the riviera maya towns are underappreciated by us texans... skip cancun altogether and head south!
The DR & Haiti are completely different countries in basically totally different worlds. The DR is very much a tourism hotbed and perfectly safe.
Don't listen to the stuff about it being on next to Haiti. We stayed at Excellence Punta Cana and it was awesome. The people there are great and I would not hesitate to go back if it came up again. It's kind of corny but here is a video that we made from the trip. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/x7XDGN5DHgQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The only thing keeping us from going back is that the travel time was significantly longer for us than to go to Playa del Carmen in Mexico which will be our next all-inclusive trip.
Thanks for the input, all. Nice video firecat! We are probably going to stay at the Hard Rock hotel at Punta Cana. So far, everyone Ive asked say it's safe. Everyone she asked had their doubts. Seems fine to me though
