Installed new video card: Rage 4 - 32mb

Occasionally cutting off the tails of letters: q,p,y,j

System freezes up after a while (2+ hours, but can be random).

Some programs run slower (this could be a completely different problem).

    THX as always in advance!

Did you remove the old video driver before installing the new card?

Check your drivers to see if they're up to date.

If you run video intensive programs like Photoshop and your computer starts to lock up, it might be from your video RAM. The freezes might not be as random as you think. If it is the RAM, then you'll have to replace/fix the card.

There could be other problems I'm missing...

Could be. What I'd do -- go into device manager, remove ALL of the video devices, then let Windows re-detect and install them on your next boot. Then see how it goes.

Depends on the OS. Try right-click My Computer then select Manage. Device Manager should be there.

Re: the freezing -- what speed is your CPU, and (if you can answer) what model of motherboard do you have. Often, there are problems with voltage levels when you put a newer video card in an older motherboard AGP slot, particularly with Via chipsets.

That would also help explain some of the slowness, if it's with 3d type video.
