Jimmer will be a role player coming off the bench and people will eventually forget about him.

Rubio, I think will not last. He'll eventually use homesickness as an excuse and leave the NBA to go back to Europe. At that point people will say good riddance to an over hyped bust.

With that said, Jimmer will last longer in the NBA, which isn't saying much because I doubt he'll be that big of a contributor to his team.

There's always room in the league for people who can shoot the ball like that. I think Jimmer will find himself a place in the league for a long time, though off-the-bench. I see a ceiling of him being a great 6th man.

remember what Morey always says about teams talking themselves out of a player by focusing on what they can't do, rather than what they excel at

2× led the Spanish ACB League in steals: (2007, 2009)

Spanish ACB League Defensive Player of the Year: (2009)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricky_Rubio

Defense is supposed to be one of his strengths, now where is OHMMSS to tell us that the SPanish League is bullspit and that Jasakovauras Jackoffaaluas of Barca is a better defender than Deke, Dwight Howard and Olajuwon combined and could beat Jordan's Bulls blindfolded?

LOL! I cant even believe the naive reasoning on Rubio turning out even serviceable one day. He wont even be in the league when Jimmer starts to hit his prime years. He is younger. Not only will Ricky be a bust. The hype for him is totally unwarranted. It is gonna be funny how aweful Rubio is in the NBA.

So what happened to Rubio? How can you go from this:

In August 2006, Rubio led the rising junior Spanish national team to the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. During the tournament Rubio achieved two triple-doubles and a quadruple-double. In the 110–106 double overtime finale victory over Russia, Rubio scored 51 points, the first player to do so in FIBA tournaments since Luol Deng (in 2001), grabbed 24 rebounds, made 12 assists, and stole the ball eleven times—a performance unprecedented in the tournament's history. He also forced the first overtime with a three-point, buzzer-beating shot from mid-court. Rubio was subsequently named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading it in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

    To this:

SEASON LEAGUE TEAM GP GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% RPG APG SPG BPG PPG
    Euroleague Barcelona 20 17 22.7 .310 .224 .836 3.3 3.5 1.6 .1 6.5

Just a different style of play or did he really regress that bad?

I dont know. A few games wonder. He had his few games where he shined perhaps? Then over a larger sample size against better competition? He started to fizzle and show his true numbers. Maybe. Jimmer had a huge sample size in College to show he can do what he does on a nightly basis enough to at least be as good as JJ Reddick. Which isnt too bad. I think he ends up having aslightly better career than JJ. JJ scored off of passes in college. Jimmers game can beat double teams and he creates his own shots. Thats something everyone is missing when compairing JJ to Jimmer which is only that way because of their skin color. In reality Jimmers game is more similar to someone like Hersey Hawkins. Very similar. High scoring smaller guards who could shoot from any range and created their own shots. Hawkins college stats didnt translate to NBA because of size but he was still very productive.

You want to know what Jimmer would look like? It wont be JJ who is similar to him at all. If you want to know what Jimmer might look like as a pro go watch Stephen Curry of the Warriors. They are more alike than JJ and Jimmer are. Their games are more similar and even their stats.

In fact here are Jimmer stats
    28.9pts. 4.3apg. .396 3pt% 3.4rbds 1.3stl.

Stephen Curry's last year of college stats
    28.6pts 5.6apg. .387 3p% 4.4rbds. 2.5stl.

Completely similar players. Similar stats. 1inch difference in height. Same position. Same style of offense. Same range. Fredette even weighs more and is stronger physically than Stephen Curry. Shoots better and score slightly more. So if Morey was to bring Jimmer here? I would be ecstatic.

In fact JJ Redick played more minutes than both of these guys. Shot a way worse field goal percentage than Curry or Fredette. Scored less even still at 26.8 points game. Then to top it off scored off screens and passes in a totally different way than Curry and Fredette who could create the offense for themselves.

    Worst case jason terry?

you realize how good of a player jason is? Fredette will be much more closely resemble a guy lik JJ Redick. Enuf said. Maybe best case is jason terry, not worse case.

As for Rubio, I do agree. I think his career will be very similar to MIke Conley's. Struggled mightily at first, but then settles down and becomes decent. He'll never be an impact player that can carry the load of a team, not from the faults we have seen from him so far. But I suppose Rubio's best case scenario could be a Rondo type player.

People. JJ is only white like Jimmer Fredette. He is nothing like him as a scorer and player. JJ is his low bar at worst.

I completely agree that Jimmer and JJ are very different players, but I disagree that JJ is low bar. JJ is a very good player and has a extremely fast release as a shooter. Jimmer, while much more multi-dimentional, has a slow release. He uses his elevation and handling skills to create shot for himself in college. I am not sure it will translate into the NBA while the defenders are much more athletic, but I surely hope so.

Don't undersell JJ Redick, he is a good player. It's no guarantee that Jimmer will be better.

News flash, Rudy Fernandez was also the Defensive Player of the Year in the Spanish League. RUDY FERNANDEZ.

Why don't you please point out Rubio's Defensive Player of the Year award from the actual top level competition in Europe, the Euroleague.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euroleague_Defensive_Player_of_the_Year

    2004-05 Dimitris Diamantidis

    2005-06 Dimitris Diamantidis

    2006-07 Dimitris Diamantidis

    2007-08 Dimitris Diamantidis

    2008-09 Dimitris Diamantidis

    2009-10 Viktor Khryapa

    2010-11 Dimitris Diamantidis

I don't see Ricky Rubio's name anywhere on the Euroleague Best Defender list. The Spanish League is a second-tier, inferior level competition to the Euroleague. It is the SECOND-TIER competition in Europe.

Rudy Fernandez was the Defensive Player of the Year in the Spanish League. In the first-tier Euroleague competition, Rudy Fernandez was never considered a good defender.

Actually, Ricky Rubio is too slow to guard any point guards one to one in Euroleague without hand checking. In the Euroleague, unlike in the NBA (where it is banned), hand checking is legal.

Rubio's defense mainly consists of hand checking the opposing point guard the entire time he has the ball and he is extremely aggressive with the hand checking - I mean 90s Derek Harper level. He will foul out of any NBA game within 5 minutes if he plays that way in the NBA. Rubio has slow feet and he cannot keep any Euroleague point guards in front of him without hand checking them. In the NBA, where hand checking is illegal, he won't be able to guard anyone one to one.

It won't matter much though, because with the current NBA rules as they are, no point guards can really guard each other man to man anyway. Rubio defensively, has good hands, good anticipation, good defensive awareness, he can get in the passing lanes, he is good at getting steals with his long arms, and he can really press the opposing ball handler up the court.........

But his man to man defense, minus hand checking, is awful. He's too slow to guard any Euroleague point guards man to man without hand checking them. Euroleague point guards can just blow right by him with his slow lateral movement. At age 20, Rubio has below average lateral foot speed at the point guard position, for Euroleague standards.

He also gets abused in the low post on defense in the Euroleague quite often, where point guards just post him up over and over. In the Euroleague playoffs, Diamantidis destroyed him in the low post. The lucky thing for Rubio though is that in the NBA the point guards are much smaller than they are in the Euroleague, so he probably won't have to deal with being posted up in the NBA, like he does in the Euroleague.

I think Jimmer is going to surprise some folks with his effectiveness at the next level. And I think Rubio will suprise some folks in how badly he struggles in the NBA. Ironically if Jimmer was from Europe he'd be a more respected prospect.

This can't be emphasized enough. Its no surprise that with the aggressive hand-check defense of Europe weaker speed guards like Jennings really get abused while big dudes like Diamantidis and Marko Jaric can play point and not get abused by lack of footspeed.

Lack of footspeed will limit Rubio's abilities on D in the NBA, but whats more important is how it'll limit his abilities on offense too. People keep talking about how the more "open" style of the NBA will help his offense, but that's only applies really on 1v1 situations where lack of handcheck makes guarding good guards impossible. Unfortunately, without footspeed (the most basic req for almost all good pts) RR wont be able to take advantage of the reduced perim physicality. He will be forced to run pick and rolls all days ala Steve Nash, but without Nash's shot or the ability to penetrate off the pick ala D-Will, his PnR options will be extremely limited. My only conclusion is that Rubio will be a moderate to major disappointment in the vein of Spanoulis et al.

Regardless of the extremely skewed and totally wrong ideas and judgements the Rockets fan base has about Spanoulis, he is 10 times a better shooter than Rubio and he is a lot quicker than Rubio. His scoring ability is so far above Rubio's that it's not even worth trying to measure.

When you think about the level of Rubio you have to understand that it would be a big accomplishment for him to at his peak, even be about half as good as current Spanoulis.

Spanoulis is already a lot less athletic and a lot slower than when he was 20. When Spanoulis was 20 he used to dunk on 7 footers in the lane in traffic. Now think about that for a second.......

At age 28, the current age of Spanoulis, he is much slower and less athletic than he was at age 20 (Rubio's current age). Now look at Spanoulis playing against Euroleague level at age 28 and see how far quicker, faster, more explosive, and more athletic he is than Rubio.

    <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/h5pKzHWgkcY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Spanoulis at age 28, after already getting slower than he was at Rubio's age, is way faster, more explosive than Rubio. Spanoulis is an excellent 3 point shooter, with basically unlimited shooting range, and he can create his own shot against any defense, against any team, at any level. Which is why he averaged 18 points a game against Team USA at the World Championship and the Olympics.

The truth of the matter is that Rubio is much less athletic, much less explosive, a much worse shooter, with much less range, and is much slower than Spanoulis is. Rubio's athletic level will continue to lower as well, just like Spanoulis is slower at 28 than he was at 20, so to will Rubio be slower. Again, 28 year old Spanoulis can run circles around 20 year old Rubio.

Spanoulis can score and shoot from anywhere on the floor, Rubio is an air ball waiting to happen when left wide open. Spanoulis has unlimited shooting range, and Rubio can barely shoot past 20 feet.

This Rockets fan base thinks generally seems to think of Spanoulis as the worst player of all time and Rubio as some superstar of European basketball. The truth is that Rubio is not half as talented, nor fit for the NBA as Spanoulis is, maybe not even 1/3 as much.

Rubio will never be as good as Spanoulis is. If the expectation for Rubio by NBA fans is Spanoulis, then the expectations are severely overly high because he is not even half that talented.
