I am sorrowfully in need of a new computer to do some editing and AE work... Anyone have any input on a good graphics card/processor/ram needed so that I can render in real time on AE? I am young and my hair is gray already from dealing with this BS!
also, remember that if you are going the windows route, you must have the 64 bit version of windows..
Quad Core 2.8ghz (not sure exactly on the GHZ rating, 2 yrs old though) 4gig ram 1TB HD+ 500gb HD 2 nVidia 8800 in SLI I am thinking of building my new computer with these specs i7-960 Quad Core 3.2 GHZ 16gb Ram 3TB HDD GTX 580 3gb GFX card I just hope that can render it in real time...I hear AE:CS5 doesnt support SLI so its really no use to double up that card.
That's a good start. I was looking along this setup: Intel Core i7-2600K(quad-core) Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) $300-320 PNY NVIDIA Quadro 4000 $700 8GB DDR3 1600MHz/1800MHz $100/under $150 Asus Motherboard $200 2 Western Digital VelociRaptor 10000RPM in RAID MODE 300GB 2x150=$300 600GB 2x250=$500 or SSD Drives in RAID mode or Single(I would try to stay away from SSD Drives since I don't think it's good to use it if you do heavy work. It tends to die unexpectedly so the risk you will have to take for speed vs instability)
These are workstation cards right? Like designed specifically for render work etc? Do you know if theyre also good for gaming or would it be better to save the card for rendering only? I had heard about the Quadros but I know relatively little about them compared to say a GTX 580 etc
It's terrible for gaming. But if you're going to use Premier you're better off getting an Nvidia card because it uses CUDA while AE uses OpenGL. A gaming card should be adequate enough. The GTX 590 has DUAL GPU but I don't know if Premier CS5 take advantage of the 2 GPU.
I seriously have been trying to rep you for 3 posts now...but it says I must spread around rep which I have been doing. Do you know how much I must spread before I can rep you again? Youve been a giant help.
Cowboy_Bebop Have you or anyone else have any suggestions on a good brand or building a small footprint desktop pc for windows use? (have no mac-apple experience). The uses of this computer would mainly be surfing, clutch fans, checkbook use,and google earth. I would like to be able to output to my hd tv to supplement my Roku box. I definitely want HDMI out! Have a large HDMI monitor already but my laptop is old and not interested in another one. There are so many brands out there i have no idea what is what and all those greek descriptions of what they have in them. Don't know where to start.
NP You can try the Asrock ION 3D 152D or Asrock ION 330 . It's a sweet little box that you can easily move around and take it downstairs and have it right next to your tv. I have the Asrock ION 330 and installed Windows 7 64bit on it. I stripped a lot of stuff(removing aero and other stuff) off of Windows 7 to make it run pretty stable. I have it as an alternative machine just to surf the web and other stuff instead of my turning on my more powerful machine. It uses just only under 40 watts for this whole system. I replaced the hard drive that came with it and replace it with a 30GB SSD drive for my system and just use external HD for backup. They are just under $400 and $450 respectively. A nice little HTPC. You can also run XBMC on it.
Render in real-time? It's all about CPU and Memory. 8GB and a Core i5 (at least) should be decent enough.

Okay found it about the same time you replied. Where did you get yours at? What is aero and can it be removed from the program uninstall in the control panel.
I suggest keeping your current rig, maxing out your memory and replacing those gaming video cards for a Quadro 5000 $1800. Check out this article for some performance comparisons with FirePro cards and some GeForce / Radeon gaming cards. http://hothardware.com/Reviews/NVIDIA-Unleashes-Quadro-6000-and-5000-Series-Workstation-GPUs-Review/
I bought mine at my local store in Canada. You might have to order your from somewhere else since I don't think they carry them at Newegg. But if you want something more powerful for around the same price I recommend buying parts and put it together yourself or get someone to. I would have done this but couldn't find some parts locally and I don't think Core i was out yet.
