11. Houston Astros The Pick: George Springer, OF, Connecticut The Buzz: Springer is the best college athlete in the draft and is a great pick for the Astros, a team that reached on all three first-round picks last year. Springer can stay in center field and could develop into a perennial All-Star. He hits for average, moderate power, and can steal plenty of bases. http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=1185&CID=1228739

KendallRogers #UCONN OF George Springer goes to the #Astros No. 11 overall. Really like Springer, he absolutely murders the ball.

Kiethlaw espn George Springer ranked No. 2 on my preseason top 50 on the basis of his tremendous tools. He has the type of total package we rarely see in a college position player and some hints of polish around his game. Unfortunately, questions about his swing mechanics have crushed his draft stock. Springer is a superior athlete. He's an above-average runner with a plus arm and raw power, and has the type of body you rarely see on college position players because guys who look like this are signed out of high school. He has tremendous bat speed, can turn on good velocity and has a history of running deep counts, although he lacks a two-strike approach. Unfortunately, he's developed a real back-side collapse, so now he's swinging uphill, making lower-quality contact when he makes contact at all. That back side -- since he's a right-handed hitter, that refers to the right side of his body -- has always been a little soft through contact, but it's much more severe now, and means he's not making the hard contact that you want a potential top-10 pick in the draft to make. If a hitting coach can clean him up, he has the potential to hit in the middle of a major-league lineup with plus defense in right field, but that's a substantial and very open question.
Springer went into the year as the #2 draft prospect according to Keith Law. Struggled a little out of the gate but came out strong late. Has 5-tool all-star type upside. Not a reach. Is more of a gamble than the #3 type college arms out there but also higher upside. Wanted A. Bradley but still happy with the pick.
Nope...this guy was projected anywhere from 9-16, from what i've seen. Dude is a legit talent, best hitter in the draft outside of Josh Bell.
Espn.com and mlb.com each had him picked at 18 in their final mocks. Not really much of a "reach". ESPN Insider's scouting report...
Clearly the Ed Wade/Bobby Heck draft board never matches mock drafts. This pick bothers me. The Astros development system hasn't shown a lot of progress in developing toolsy players into hitters.
Agreed. It would suck to look back on today and say, "We could have picked Jungmann" Especially with him playing in our backyard.....although I am fairly confident Heck and company did their due diligence on him
The crawfishboxes had a nice write up on Springer and his chances of being drafted by the Stros.. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2011/6...pect-profile-george-springer-of-university-of
George Spring is no reach. if anything, he's the pick because they don't think DeShields (Who actually was a reach) will work out. No surprise considering the year DeShields had in low A ball. Here is a great, recent article put up earlier today. Gives everyone an idea how our most recent picks have been performing in the minors: http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2011/6/6/2208636/astros-minor-league-recap
I agree with you on the not being a reach but how does a CF/Corner Outfieder effect DD Jr? He plays second? We don't have above average talent at the corner outfield position with the exception of JD Martinez?
It's funny they bottom- line him.with Anthony Gose, as he was the guy they didn't want in the Phillies deal that they turned into Wallace.
