The assistants got paid their playoff bonus based on the contracts they negotiated. Perhaps they should blame themselves, their agents or their lawyers for not getting a bigger bonus. Had they gotten swept in the first round, do you think they would have taken less of a bonus?

Last year fine. That's what they negotiated.

But to continue to lowball them. It is pretty bad.

And I doubt that many of them will stay. Joerger is gone. Damon is gone.

Bibby and Davis are going to stay because they have no choice. But if they got another offer I expect them gone too.

    It basically hamstrings Hollins.

I surprised that some are actually arguing that the assistants with Memphis shouldn't have received a playoff share. That's OK, because it's a plus for the Rockets. We just might end up with one of their top assistants, Joerger (I hope so!) and it weakens the team ahead of us this season going into next season, if there's a season.

Hopefully this influences Joerger to join McHale in Houston.

    Exactly.

As far as negotiating this season's contract...it is on them. If you get a better offer somewhere else, go for it. My personal feeling is there are more competent assistant coaches than positions in the NBA. None are essential and if they are, I am sure Hollins will go to bat for them. However, I am not about to act like I attribute the Grizzlies success to their assistant coaches more than an increase in roster talent and experience.

Doesn't appear they are lowballing them at all according to the blog. They are simply not negotiating with them at all. Your first comment in your original post is simply not true, at least according to the blog. They did get their contractual bonus.

Sure, they were paid their contracted amount. But, the team outperformed all expectations. The victory is undermined for coaches by being underpaid. It'd have been so easy to pay an extra helping of bonus to reward the good season. They might feel like ownership cared about them.

Instead, I expect no trouble convincing Joerger to come over the Rockets. Thanks for training him up for us, Memphis!

Cassell was 36 that season. Randolph is 29 and in the prime of his career.

Randolph was more like Brand -- a consistent 20-10 performer on some bad teams who finally broke through a bit.

Again, had they gotten swept in the first round, and the owner tried to stiff them on their bonus, would the coaches have understood?

The funniest part, the last 3 years for the Grizzlies is lower than any season in Vancouver

The blog does talk about the value of their upcoming contracts, that it doesn't appear that they will get a significant increase to their already low salaries. The contractual bonus was already agreed upon, so that's understandable. But when they renegotiate a new contract after the 30th with the same lowball figures in mind it shows a lack of respect. Sure management can do what they like, and it is up to the assistants to improve their salaries, I just think that karma is a b**** and we will see if management knows what they are doing.

No, they have to fulfill their contractual obligations. That's really beside the point. I'm thinking of the Grizzlies' enlightened self-interest. They can refrain from rewarding extra bonuses despite the head coach's request, they can keep their assistants some of the lowest-paid in the league, they can keep them on 1-year deals and avoid paying them during the lockout. They aren't doing anything unscrupulous. But, it's not advisable. It doesn't inspire loyalty or good work.

I asked my employer for a raise when I got my MBA. They gave me one, but it was still low for the market and I started looking for other jobs even though I was otherwise happy there. Some time later, I got an offer and gave notice. My original employer asked for an opportunity to counter-offer. I told them I wouldn't even look at it; they had their chance already. That's what Joerger is going to do. And all the others too, as soon as they get a chance. And, it's not like the Griz are going to get to replace those guys with Dwayne Casey and JVG. They get to check out Maloney's coaching skills.
