The Cat for John Stockton - What would happen?

Okay fellas, with all the talk about Steve being more of a shooting gaurd than a point gaurd and with all the lack of passing, I thought of this when someone mentioned maybe we should trade Cuttino for a point gaurd.

How would this team perform if we had John Stockton for a PG and Steve as our SG?

Let me tell you this. If that happens, Stockton will finally get his championship ring.

We would perform horribly for the follwing reasons:
    1. Steve would be mad that we traded his boy and our best pure scorer.
    2. Steve would have to play the SG all the time and he would be destroyed by all the talented big SG's in the league (Kobe, TMac, etc.)
    3. Stockton would be completly ineffective b/c he can't break down too many players when Rudy calls for his ISO 10-15 times a game.
    4. The Rock fans hate Stockton and would pelt him w/ debri throughout every home game which would stimy his game.
    5. Stockton is very old and will probably retire after this year leaving us w/ no SG b/c Francis would be moved back to the point and our team would be completly screwed since its not like Stockton would lead us to the ship this year anyway.

PCMILLS - be prepared to get flamed by the Jazz haters.

Why trade at all? IMHO, if the Rox make the playoffs, and Yao shows a strong development, Stockton (who is in the last year of his contract) would consider the Rox MCE next year.

IMHO, Stockton still has enough gas in the tank.

I hate the Jazz as much as the next guy, but I could deal with Stockton (but not Malone) for a year or two.

This idea dosent even deserve a full fledged F,A,R,T, Stocton will retire with the JAZZ ...RIGHTFULLY SO ..If the Rockets wanted a point guard from Gonzaga the could have drafted Dan Dickau.

I only brought this up to bring on discussion.

I probably dislike the Jazz as much as the next guy on this site. The only team I dislike more is the Lakers.

At one time I couldn't stand Barkley, but then he was a Rocket and I became a fan. I would do the same with anybody that joins our team, except for Pippen.

I know we'd never get Stockton, and I don't propose we trade for him. This whole ISO situation just has me worried and I'm wondering what we'd be like if we had a true PG who could thread the needle with his passes.

Sure lets trade one of the best young scorers in the league for an over the hill, old man about to break down.

There is no way I want to even imagine that SOB in a Rockets jersey. I cant believe that you would even fathom the thought of it. There is no one the Rockets hate more, with the exception of Karl Malone. While were at it, why dont we sign Malone and Pippen to. :D

Ditto that comment. Even if Stockton is better than Cat, he's far, far older.

    I will not fart. :D

Seriously, this trade would work best iff our players mature within a year. I envision that Flopton should have 1-2 years left in his tank (that's a scary thought). If our frontcourt players (Yao and Eddie primarily) would play up to their potential in a short time, I guess the Flopton trade could bring a ring or 2 to Houston.

But no, I don't want him to retire with any ring. I wanna puke just thinking about that trade ... oh well ... ;)

Did the Clippers re-up Miller on a long term contract or is he a FA at the end of this year?

Just curious. No way Stockton comes here. Im not ready to break up this team. But if Francis proves hes not capable of making his teamates better as a PG (with everyone around him healthy for a rull year), then maybe there are others that might be available and Francis can either play the 2 or pout.

    Rocketability and codell,

Thanks for actually presenting ideas around the concept rather than just dissing me for the idea b/c it was Flopton we were talking about.

I too agree that Stockton is "old", near retirement, flops way too much and probably isn't or won't be trade bait. At the same time, I believe his skills at point gaurd could make this a championship team much sooner than not.

The 2 questions I see arising from this discussion are:

    1. Who might be availabe that plays the same type of game as Stockton and wouldn't put us over the salary cap?

    2. What do we lose by getting rid of Mobley if Francis slides over to SG?

I see defensive mismatch if Francis is sliding to the 2 guard. Our backcourt would be way too small with whatever point guard and Francis to defend the opponent. Well, not that Francis' defense is excellent, but size is a big area to be concerned about.

Interesting someone here brought up Andre Miller of the Clips ... hmm ... anyone knows what his contract is like?

This is the problem: Mobley is going to be around for 10 years. At peak, he's a 20 ppg shooter and while he isn't Kobe, he isn't chopped liver either.

Stockton... how many years? 1? 2? And he won't be enough to bring this team a championship, cause guard isn't the problem position on this team. It's forward and center.

There is ***WAYYYYYY*** too much loss of value in a Stockton trade.

Some people here really do need to read Bill James's comments about baseball career value and translate that into a basketball context, to wit:

You *don't* trade young pretty good guys for really old good guys. Too much loss of value.

My post probably wasn't well stated. I was coming from a purely hypothetical view. What would happen if we had Stockton? Would we win the West the first year? Does he make each of our players better? Would Francis learn from Stockton and become the next Jason Kidd?

The point is, a pure and instictive passer could change the dynamics of this team so much. The motion offense would thrive.
