Hmm... I think there is usually a surprising correllation between a talented team and a winning coach, but... The Lakers always choked before Jackson came. Sure, it *could* be a coincidence, but for me, their improvement was simply too drastic. OT: why exactly do you like Rudy so much? It's extremely obvious that he's not that good at coaching defense. ------------------

Quote by Haven: "why exactly do you like Rudy so much?" How many active coaches have brought NBA championships to their cities? Quote by Haven: "It's extremely obvious that he's not that good at coaching defense." You couldn't be more wrong. How long have you followed the Rockets? During the championships seasons, Rudy stressed time and again the defense was the key. He acknowledged the irony of his teams winning with defense when he was not that great of a defender as a player. Basketball is not that complicated of a game. There are no rocket scientists who are coaches that have offensive or defensive schemes that just befuddle the opposition. Good defense is individual determination. Don't tell me that you expect an NBA coach to motivate his players to play good defense. It has to come from within. One of these days, Francis will want to be a good defender to improve his all around game. When he wants to, he will. Until he does, he won't, and it won't have one iota to do with coaching. In several of your posts, you question why people like Rudy or why people think he is a good coach. In one, you go so far to say that if you like Rudy as a coach, you are too stupid to think for yourself. If you don't like Rudy, fine. I'll certainly acknowledge that he has made and will make mistakes. However, he absolutely is not a bad defensive coach. ------------------
Moe: I would like to see the quote in which I claimed that people who like Rudy don't think for themselves. I've never said that. I'm somewhat uncomfortable with these threads myself, and always try to let you know that I LIKE Rudy. I think he's easily one of the BETTER coaches in the league. I don't think he's the best. What I *don't* like is blind faith. I dislike it when people use "well, Rudy thinks..." as an argument against different positions. That's a bad argument... something is TRUE in and of itself, not because one person or another agrees with it. If you feel something to be true, persuade me with demonstrations, statistics, and logic. My problem isn't with Rudy... it's with all the people who blindly accept any decision he might make. Personally, I hope Rudy coaches the Rockets for years to come... I also hope that you objectively consider his decisions. As for the issue of Rudy's defensive coaching ability. I admit my statement was hyperbolic. In fact, he isn't bad... but I don't think he's as good as he has been given credit for. I specifically had a problem with his defensive coaching last year, and against Utah in 97. Last year, Hakeem very obviously had declined (or was injured), and Cato clearly couldn't fill his shoes. Yet Rudy seemed to have the same defensive strategy: funnel people into the lane, where the center can swat the shot. While Francis' defense wasn't great, it was this error that allowed him to be shredded as much as he was. Francis wasn't given help, even on extremely good offensive PG's, they drove by him... to make a lay-up easily over Cato or Pig. This wouldn't have been possible with Hakeem. BTW, I've been following the Rockets fairly closely since 87, which was when my family got cable. ------------------ [This message has been edited by haven (edited August 02, 2000).]
