If the singer/rapper didn't die, would they still be relevant in today's music?

Biggie and Pac would still be relevant. I mean Jay-z is still relevant so I think those two would still be relevant.

Finally, a non stupid thread. Hope it doesn't degenerate into a dumb one.

Mike hutch had a solo cd, and I don't think it did too well. I don't think their sound would carry past the late 90s.

However, when people die, I think people over rate them some.

Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Vaughn would both be as relevant today as they were when they died. In other words (especially Jimi), hugely, unimaginably relevant. Jim Morrison? For some reason, I think he'd be fat.

If Snoop Dogg woulda been killed instead of Tupac or Biggie, we woulda said he would NOT have been relevant past the "G-Funk" era. But he manages to stay in the public eye, so I wouldnt totally count Biggie out. Working with P Diddy would be a plus. If he didnt do it in music, he'da been self deprecating and jovial enough to make himself into something of a punchline on reality shows or something.

Michael Hutchence would not have been that relevant. Maybe in a "Huey Lewis" type way being recognizable and likable, but doesnt mean we're buying his music any more.

(What I want to know is - he's still living but how come Terence Trent D'arby didnt get HIS LONG lasting RELEVANCE like was projected? I thought he was "transcendent" and "one to look out for"?)

    Biggie would not be relevant.

Pearl Jam would be considered a better and more commercially successful band than Nirvana would have been had Cobain not died.

Look at how much more popular the Beatles became after Ringo Starr died.

Biggie didn't really become relevant until he died. Therefore, I highly doubt he'd be relevant if he were here today.

Tupac on the other hand was way ahead of his time and I wish I could see what the hell he'd be up to today. Probably political activism or something.

If Freddie Mercury didnt die, he would still making music, and Queen would be bigger than a lot of bands now. and I think he would still touring around the world.

    Kirk Cobain - Yes
    Tupac - Yes
    Michael Hutchence - No
    John Lennon - Hell No
    Jimi Hendrix - Maybe
Jim Morrison - In the 90's yes but now NO
    Janice Joplin - No
    Bob Marley - Yes
    Marvin Gaye - Yes
    Stevie Ray Vaughn - Yes
    Freddie Mercury - No

    Vanilla Ice - No

If guys like Beck and Trent Reznor are no longer relevant (although they lasted way beyond what was expected), then I see no reason why someone like John Lennon or Jim Morrison would be relevant.

Some non-agreeable points I see mentioned here.

John Lennon with the MOST explicit "No"?

Beck isnt relevant? As in his most recent album being Grammy nominated?

Or Trent Reznor's score for the Social Network movie WINNING the Golden Globe Best Original Score award?

    All the rest, possibly.

Freddie Mercury would still be relevant and Queen would still be one of the best in the business.
