Two of my favorite Soul singers are Al Green and Phillipe Wynne.
Al Green's autobiography is a good read as well.

Growing up my Mom was always listening to R&B, first it was her Stevie Wonder phase in the mid to late 70's, then Teddy Pendergrass in the early 80's and then Luther Vandross in the late 80's.
I think Aretha doesn't get as much credit for her arranging skills as she should.
If there is one person I could come back as, it would be Norman Whitfield

As far as the greater/greatest Soul artist? Why bother? Just enjoy and listen to as many as you can.

Great artists no doubt, but I have to go with Al Green. His voice is so unique and basically awesome. Plus his music seems to resonate with me. He's on of my top five artists of all time. Considering the other are rock I have to say he's the best though I am surprised by the lack of support for the Godfather of Soul. I understand he plays funkier stuff, but James Brown was the man!
