Speaking of the Heat. Lebron seems fairly gay as well. Dwade seems hetero but sometimes he dresses gay.

Good for him and hopefully this will encourage others to be more open about it. Like it or not, it's an issue that carries an enormous stigma for no apparent good reason. The sooner the world and, in particular, the NBA community can accept it and move on the better.

Something like 10% of males identify as gay, bisexual or whatever. There are 430+ players in the NBA. 30 teams with countless execs.

Do the math. And more importantly: get over it.

I don't think he's declaring his sexuality to the general public for acceptance. From my understanding he has been out to friends and family for a while. He just wanted to share this for others to serve as a role model. Pretty cut and dry.

It's news because reportedly, the NBA is still an industry where gay people feel they have to keep their sexuality a secret, like a self-imposed "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

It would be great if truly no one felt threatened by another person's sexual orientation, and therefore this becomes a non-issue, but that's not the case.

Seems obvious to me. Twenty years ago people couldn't come out in any field or their career would be ruined. There was a huge stigma and prejudice. If public figures never came out in public it would probably still be the same today.

While it's not as bad today as back then, there's still a large amount of people who carry a significant prejudice. Especially in sports. While I get the locker room issue, I bet individual sports athletes would still be afraid to out themselves.

My only problem is that I've seen some coverage implying his admission was trailblazing in some way. John Amaechi came out before him, and he was a lot closer to a lockerroom than this guy at the time. Good for Welts or whatever, but it's not newsworthy because it's not new.

John Amaechi came out after he left the NBA, didn't he? What's newsworthy here is that Welts is coming out while he's still in the NBA, and at a very prominent position at that.

yeah, this is ridiculous. this kind of self-serving revelation. what does he think he's doing? trying to gain acceptance for his lifestyle and possibly help others going through the same struggles he's probably faced? i mean now i, as a heterosexual male, am having to see links to articles about someone coming out as gay. who's the real victim here?

this reminds me of stories my parents used to tell about the same kind of attention grabbing they had to deal with. this one time, they had to read quite a few articles about some lady who sat in the back of a bus. i mean come on lady, we've all had to sit in the back of a bus. why do we have to hear about it? just so she can get her name in the paper?

uhh, i'm pretty sure when you ignore a problem, it just goes away.

nobody cares if you like getting gangbanged by 10 guys and a baseball bat, keep it to yourself. What you do sexually concerns no one but you and your partner. Not newsworthy in the slightest.
