I'm floored. I thought maybe one last run with this group of Celtics then he would retire to be with family. He seemed pretty burnt out, and this group doesn't have much of a window left. Does he really want to preside over the transition that's going to take place over the next 2-4 years?

It's the Celts..they will be able to finish rebuilding within 5 years and come back to contend.

Completely agree with you. I wonder if they blew him away with money. What a turnaround.

He'll leave in 2 years, citing "family and health issues"

It took them well over a decade to rebuild post-Bird/McHale.

Rondo may help them bridge eras this go round, though.

Maybe you're not so familiar with the 1993-2006 Celtics? :p

There was a decent run tucked in those 13-14 years, though.

    Colin Cowherd made this observation:

Doc is doing this as a return of favor to Danny Ainge, who has been subject to servere criticism for making the Perkins trade.

the years before the Allen / Garnett arrival, Celts nation wanted Doc out; but Ainge had his back.

Nice to see the organization appreciating a good coach and extending him even as their team is getting really close to rebuilding.

I'm not part of Celtics nation, but I thought Doc had given up and should have been fired.

That team really misses Perkins, but I think they're missing Tony Allen almost as much. They really could have used him going up against LeBron and Wade.

The duration of the contract is meaningless. If he feels like going, he'll go. Why shouldn't he sign a long term deal? Whats the benefit from signing a short one? He gets to have his cake and eat it too.
