I've already done a lot of research, but thought I would turn to the board's vast knowledge for any extra recommendations on things not to miss. I think I'm mostly going to stick to the capital cities with a side trip to see Bergen and the fjords in Norway. Hopefully, if I return in the future I'll be able to and explore more remote locations, small towns, nature destinations, etc, but not this trip. However, I'd be willing to take some day trips from the capitals if there are sites worth seeing. Definitely thinking about taking a day trip to go see some castles north of Copenhagen. Any experiences you can share or general advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance! Logistics: 16 Days in August. Flying into Helsinki Finland. Flying out of Copenhagen, Denmark. Current Itinerary: Day 1: Helsinki Day 2: Helsinki Day 3: Helsinki w/ overnight ferry to Stockholm Day 4: Stockholm Day 5: Stockholm Day 6: Stockholm Day 7: Stockholm w/ day train to Oslo Day 8: Oslo Day 9: Oslo Day 10: Oslo Day 11: Oslo w/ early train to Flam, Norway to see the fjords Day 12: More fjords w/ Train to Bergen Day 13: Bergen w/ night flight to Copenhagen. Day 14: Copenhagen Day 15: Copenhagen Day 16: Copenhagen
Copenhagen - It's been years since I was there, but I went to Macbeth's castle, Tivoli Garden, did a bunch of wandering by the wharves to see Viking ship/maritime museums, saw the Little Mermaid statue, etc. I did some relaxing in various parks as well, which were beautiful. If you like more unique tourist attractions, there is a museum in Copenhagen dedicated to the history of p*rn. Also, it's a minor detail, but Finland isn't Scandinavian.
Thanks for the info! Yeah, I've heard that. I guess it's just convenient for the guide books and tourist industry to lump Finland in with the rest of them?
bergen area and fjords one of the prettiest places I have ever been. We were all over bergen area and voss. Really really pretty scenery. highly recommend. hope you like seafood. really good Good job taking an unusual trip. I hope you are going in summer time. Stays light at 2AM ..freaky.
I've been to Denmark several times, Oslo, and through various parts of Sweden a couple times (Stockholm, Jonkoping, some small towns in there), and I have to say, it's actually a fairly boring part of the world in my opinion. I just didn't find it that interesting at all. The fjords will be amazing, yes, but the cities are very blah. And stupidly expensive, if that matters to you. sorry to be so negative, but I'd vacation elsewhere.
one thing to note on this is bergen is the view of city: http://www.floibanen.com/visartikkel.asp?art=139 also the viking ships are there right at waterfront in bergen: http://blog.alternativecontext.com/2009/09/norway-part-1-oslo-and-bergen.html in stockholm the archipelago was kinda cool: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_archipelago Stockholm is nice enough to walk around. Seems like maybe too much oslo and copenhagen and not enough fjords... but the cities have enough fine dining, and other first world things I'm sure it will be fine
What I hear is that if you like to drink (Alcohol) you should bring your own bottles because the price of alcohol is expensive there.
