I don't think Sleepy Floyd lived up to the hype either, he was ok, but coming out of college, he was supposed to be a star.
Half of Moses' rebounds were a result of him doing layup drills with himself. I'd be interested to see if anybody knows what percentage of his rebounds were off his own miss... I always did wonder if Mo was trying to pad his stats. P.S. -- gotta disagree... Hakeem was the best center the Rockets ever had. ------------------ Just shut up and post
Going through the all-time roster is quite a trip down memory lane. Here is my list of ADDITIONAL over- and under-achievers that I haven't seen mentioned thus far: Overachievers Kevin Kunnert Allan Leavell Billy Paultz Robert Reid Underachievers Gus Bailey (injury) Rick Barry Alonzo Bradley EC Coleman (death) Dave Jamerson Lee Johnson Cliff Meely Rudy White Worst Transaction The Rockets cut James Silas in order to keep Johnny Egan when they first came to Houston. Of course, Silas went on to a very good career with the Spurs. ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils.
<q>"Half of Moses' rebounds were a result of him doing layup drills with himself."</q> So he was a quick leaper and had tenacity to stay after it until the job was done. He also had a nice touch on the jumper. If you never saw him play with those woeful Rocket teams, you missed one of the greatest Rocket players of All-Time ------------------ "Your not a real member of CC.net unless you have 1000 posts" [This message has been edited by BobFinn* (edited August 01, 2000).]
You people are WRONG about Rodney McCray. He was considered the best Western Con. small forward in the league, except for James Worthy. You can argue if you want, but you will be wrong. I was there for every game- were you???? ------------------
There are and have been varying degrees of hype. Rodney McCray had a very solid career and did everything asked of him. I don't recall him being expected to lead us to the promised land. I don't remember Joe Barry Carrol playing for the Rockets. I do remember to high picks, Joe C Meriwether and Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, (Kobe's dad) not panning out. I would say the "Whopper", Billy Paultz, lived up to whatever hype there was about him. ------------------
Not much "hype" surrounding Kenny Thomas, but his picture is at the top of the Clutchcity page today. KICK @SS!! ------------------ Kenny Thomas had a foul called on him in the Western Conference Finals.
In terms of the inner circle, we over hyped Cato last year during the pre-season. In a big way. I don't see us hyping anyone this year other than Langhi. Thing is, he may be the real deal. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
I agree! When you get selected 3rd in the draft, you're expected to a bit better than a "solid" contributor. ------------------ Tom Archer www.sourcedna.com
You people are WRONG about Rodney McCray. He was considered the best Western Con. small forward in the league, except for James Worthy. Does the name Alex English ring a bell? Remember him? 8 straight all-star appearences from 81-88. 1997 Hall of Fame inductee. 7th leading scorer of all time. Member of the NBA at 50 All time team. Is it coming back now? So, back to the question of exactly who were the people that considered Rodney McCray and his zero all star appearances the 2nd best SF in the West? ------------------ [This message has been edited by aelliott (edited August 02, 2000).]
hehehehe folx brought up Duck Donson . . er . . Buck Johnsons we called him Duck be cause he was always getting blasted by opposing Players . . [After every shot they had . . .Me and friends would screams FEATHERS . . just floating in the air] I like Rodney but 2nd best SF? I dunno . . Like Aelliot said Alx 'The Pink Panther' English was awesome [Steve Smith is a Poor Man's English] Quiet, Classy and Money in the bank What is Gervin Sr Play? SG or SF? [or am i going to far back hehehehe like with Jamal Wilks heheh] Rodney was SOLID Role Player I wanted more aggression BTW Wasn't his brother SKOOTER the star on the Louisville Teams What happened to him? Rocket River I remember them as Rodney and Skooter McCray ------------------
Didn't the Rockets draft McCray instead of Drexler. No way did he live up to the hype. ------------------
Did Allen Leavell live up to the hype? I only saw him when he was injured all the time. I just remember he was supposed to be the one of the fastest players in the NBA. However, I never saw that. ------------------
BRAVO AELLIOTT!! McCray was the third pick overall in his draft year. He had a decent career, but never did he reach his billing. Sorry Rocket Expert, you may have been at every game to see McCray play, but that means you were probably not watching the rest of the West play. ------------------ HOOP-T ------------------
rockbox: Yeah, I'd say Leavell exceeded his hype because he had none. He came from out of nowhere (Oklahome City U?) and was a dynamic (and occasionally skittish) player for the Rockets. He had the jets! He must have played here for 8 years plus. ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils.
Kenny "the Jet" Smith worked out pretty good. ------------------ I'm sticking with Charlotte. I can't flip because I don't want to be confused with Peter Vecsey. -- Charles Barkley
I have to agree that Rocketexpert is not an expert on the Rockets. I don't know anyone that would have considered McCray the 2nd best sf in the league back then. He was good but not nearly that level. How about Adrian Dantley on the Jazz or Mark Aguire on the Mavs. Both those guys were head and shoulders above Rodney McCray (not to mention Alex English). ------------------
