Can we finally put to rest that the Gasol/Brown trade was 1 sided

LOL great point here. Ray Allen is worth half of what Gasol is worth on the open market. What do the Thunder get for him? Expiring contracts and a 5th round pick.

Memphis oth gave away a franchise guy for capspace and a late first round pick. Out of all the superstar trades done, Memphis got the least return for their star, Jazz at least got Derrick Favors (top 3 pick) and Harris (all star guard), Minny got Al Jeff (20-10 guy at the time) and a couple of lottery picks (including their own pick back).

We drafted Hakeem when we had Ralph Sampson.

San An drafted Duncan when they had David Robinson.

Rebuilding teams need to take best player available no matter which position (ESPECIALLY IF YOU SEE A GAME CHANGING BIGMAN. Not saying Thabeet was that but clearly Memphis thought he was that).

It may surprise you to know that the grizzlies fans where calling for pau's head at any cost.

But judging by your response, nothing is going to convince you that the grizzlies sold low because you are basing it on a right then mentality. And by right then, I mean that you assume that Marc Gasol was not even an NBA level talent.

My response to this would be: your perception of a player wasn't/isn't and never will be as informed as the worst GM in the league, meaning that what you "think" was not equal value is based on a shoddy foundation to begin with: which is your own opinion. You get what I am saying here?

At the end of the day the trade worked out very good for Memphis. They had never won a playoff game until this year and they even made it to the first round.

Why don't some of you make a big deal about Charlotte basically handing Portland Gerald Wallace?

Because Portland isn't going to the NBA Finals every year from now on thanks to that trade.

Without being gifted Gasol, the Lakers would not have been able to survive the Bynum injuries every year in the playoffs. They win because of their unmatchable size up front. They wouldn't have that without Gasol.

This is a dumb way of evaluating a trade. By your logic, if Kobe had a career ending injury right after the Gasol trade and they are now a mediocre team, the trade is no longer lopsided?

    stop twisting the facts.

    B4 the trade
    • Lakers were a contending team but could not reach the Finals
    • Grizz were a perennial doormat
Both team benefitted from the trade---a "win-win" trade.

if only Minnesota's gift to Boston (despite the fact that the Lakers had offered more for KG) had benefitted the T Wolves. 4 yrs after the trade, which instantly made the Celts ring contenders, Minn is still the doormat.

Had they held onto Marc, they possibly still could have become contenders the following year.

You continually say that the Lakers were gifted Gasol which isn't true. What possible reasons do the Grizzlies have to gift a player of that caliber to somebody in their conference? You keep continually forgetting that Marc Gasol was involved in this deal.

Yeah but when they acquired Gasol, they were top of the West (tho they had just lost AB).

Derek Fisher's leadership along with Bynum's emergence was shining through.

at the time of the trade they were 35-20 and were not top of the west, they went 22-5 the rest of the season.

The Grizzlies acquired Zach Randolph through a trade that had almost nothing to do with the Gasol deal. He was an expensive headcase, and the Grizzlies had an expensive headcase contract in Quentin Richardson to swap for him.

Frankly, the Kevin Love-OJ Mayo trade where the Grizz dumped Marko Jaric's and Brian Cardinal's albatross contracts was far more helpful in creating cap space and facilitating the Randolph deal.

Kwame Brown's expiring contract lead to nothing.

Sam Young was acquired from the Rockets - and had nothing to do with the Gasol trade - in fact, we only traded them a pick they traded away in the first place.

Sam Young and Zach Randolph were acquired independently of the Gasol trade, so really the trade boils down to Pau Gasol for Marc Gasol, Darrel Arthur and Greivis Vasquez. A decent starting center, a rookie stuck behind a guy younger than he is and a decent bench guy.

And that's still a terrible deal for a player of Pau Gasol's caliber. Remember he did lead the Grizzlies to the playoffs three years in a row, including winning 49 games the last year.

Three years later and the Grizzlies are just about where they were back then. What a trade.

Of course, the big deal at the time of the trade was that the Grizzlies took just about the first offer made to them, instead of shopping around the 27yr old big time low post scorer.

    This, and only this.

At the time of the trade, 100% of the populace, I guarantee you, said that this trade was lopsided.

And like another person said on the first page, LA won championships with Gasol, while Memphis finally won a playoff series, period.

following the same logics, you too can't say that it wasn't a fair trade just because Pau Gasol happened to pan out great :rolleyes::rolleyes:

in a roundabout way, adboy just corroborated with the point that the Lakers were contenders before the trade.

Because we could play them alongside one another. Typically teams don't spend a high pick on a dude where they already have a player at his spot (that they feel strongly about). Didn't we clown Kahn for taking so many PG's in one draft?

Basketball teams just don't do that.

It's not a dumb way of evaluating the trade. Bynum was already injured when the trade was made. He wasn't coming back anywhere near full strength that season. The Lakers wouldn't have been championship contenders without the trade that first season.

I agree about Minnesota gifting Boston with KG, but at least they got Al Jefferson, a guy who was already producing in the NBA and looked to be a solid building block.

As for the Grizz being a "perennial doormat," they were a season and a half removed from having made it to the playoffs three consecutive seasons.

I agree. But it doesn't get the attention the Gasol trade did (nor should it), because it was not a trade that instantly shifted the balance of power in the league for at least four seasons.
