Prefers the Spurs: Although his name has been mentioned for the head coaching vacancy that opened this week in Golden State, as well as the Rockets’ job left vacant on April 18, Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer on Friday said he prefers to remain in San Antonio.

“I’d prefer not to say anything and just keep my name out of it as much as possible,” Budenholzer said of the speculation that he will be a candidate for head coaching jobs.

“It’s hard to explain. I’m very flattered and it’s something I want to do someday, but for right now, I’ve decided the best thing for me and my family is to stay in San Antonio.

“That could change at some time, but for the foreseeable future that’s how I feel, and that’s how I’ve felt for the last little while.”

man at this moment, its better to be Rockets fans than Spurs fans. at least we are out of the playoffs early but boy its much tougher to be West 1st seed and lose in the 1st round, now that must really suck big time. goes to show how difficult it is to win it all. i think Rockets should start building a team that can consistently make the playoffs and continue to build from there. Champions are not built over night, it takes plenty of pain and good luck to win it all. we shouldnt over tweak this team at the moment, just get a decent defensive center and we should be fine. we can slowly tweak it as time progresses. once we start consistently make the playoffs, a star would hopefully be attracted to come over. its gonna start right now by finding the right coach. at least we're not like spurs stuck with 3 aging stars who gets injured frequently, plus they Matt Freakin Bonner!! at least be glad we have P-Pat :) Sorry for the rant

Our loss. Good for him putting his family first despite such a big opportunity.

Most definitely our loss; he was my favorite of all of the so-far proposed candidates. Still....it shows a lot about his character that he puts his family's welfare first.

Sounds like Popovich will be retiring from coaching pretty soon, then.

Pops has said before that he'll retire soon after Duncan retires too, so Budenholzer maybe the rebuilding guy for the Spurs.

Pop has never said that. In fact, there is speculation that he and RC are excited about the challenge of rebuilding the Spurs to championship caliber even after Tim does retire...whenever that is. What you are thinking of is speculation from the masses that Pop will retire after Tim does. As a longtime SA resident I can tell you that Greg does not have known intentions of retiring anytime soon; and given his (terse, bordering smug) personality, likely wants to be remembered as more than Tim's coach and coattail rider.

He defers to players constantly (and correctly, I might add), but still has a measure of healthy ego. My guess is he sticks around for at least 5 years after Tim retires, which likely won't be for a couple more years. After all, they did just have a phenomenal regular season with young guys like Blair, Neal, Tiago, and Hill playing significant roles. That is not a Shane riding into the sunset situation.

    Yes he has.

He was asked before in an interview (not recently though, maybe a few years ago) what Tim has meant to him and of course Pops said a lot and that he would probably follow Tim after he retires. Of course things can change, but yes Pops has publicly intimated that thought.

IMO, Pop's common sense is greater then his ego and overseeing a rebuilding phase maybe too much for his perfectionist anal ways.

    At least he didn't say, "I don't give a S*** about Houston!"

Exactly. Coach Bud would be foolish if he came out immediately and started talking about new possible jobs for himself. This is not the time for that. This is the time, albeit a brief one, to shoe some respect and loyalty to your respectful and loyal franchise. Give it a few weeks, then start the process of "hey, I need to at least be aware of the opportunities that are out there". Proceed next to "hey, they made some compelling proposals and are willing to offer my family and I a package and opportunity right now that may never come down the road. To the Spurs organization, I want to say thank you for the opportunities you have afforded me and the valuable associations and lessons I have been privy to experience with one of the hallmark franchises. Now, however, is an opportunity to test my own mettle at the highest level. As of now, I am accepting the offer to become the next head coach of the Houston Rockets and look forward to the challenge to coach my own championship team in the near future. Thank you."

Or so I hope that's how it will go. Bud is extremely well regarded in SA, and would be an absolute coup for the Rockets. He be experienced and young enough to work with Daryl now and for the next 20 years should success follow. In truth, I believe that to be a huge factor in Adelman's dismissal - that the team is trying to construct a true institutional dynasty with an infrastructure (Owner/GM/Coach) that could potentially be together for decades. Adelman, at 65, just didn't fit that timeline and was booted. Bud does, and is capable, to boot.

I never heard that interview, for certain. That said, I would have to hear the context of the situation. Pop, like I said before, defers to his players a lot. But everything i have heard for the past year says that he and RC Buford will be excited about the challenge of rebuilding...which may not be as imminent as some here may think.

NOT what I wanted to wake up and read. I liked Bud soooo much more than any other name mentioned thus far. :(

He might have been the top candidate. Maybe Morey can convince him to at least sit down to an interview. Its just good practice to at least get interview experience. He might hold himself too highly to put up with giving Morey full control of personnel, which is understandable.

Great! We get rejected by an assistant coach because he'd rather be an assistant coach elsewhere than be the head coach for the Rockets.

Just what Morey deserves for treating people like assets.

The response by mike bud sounds more like he wants to talk to pops about his future. He's not too far away from taking over head coaching duties. Pops is closing in on retiring pretty soon. Why not just wait and stay where your family is already? Nothing is guaranteed, and that's why he said his decision could change in the far future
