    Houston Rockets

UPDATE: According to Mark Berman of FOX 26 Sports in Houston, current Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell will also interview for the Rockets' job next week.

    ---

The Houston Chronicle reports general manager Daryl Morey will spend this week interviewing candidates for the head coach vacancy.

Tuesday, Milwaukee assistant coach Kelvin Sampson will meet with Morey. On Wednesday, it's Mario Elie's turn, along with Rockets assistant coach Jack Sikma. And on Thursday, former Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson will try to convince Morey that he should be hired.

According to the newspaper, Morey is also interested in the following assistant coaches: Dallas' Dwane Casey, Boston's Lawrence Frank, Dean Demopoulos of the Clippers, Memphis' Dave Joeger and San Antonio's Mike Budenholzer.

Morey has not scheduled an interview yet with former Cleveland head coach Mike Brown.

How long do you think it will take for the organisation to make a decision? I hope its not months. It should be done well in advance of the draft.

I hope we don't decide to just break up this group. If we want to continue improving and advancing I see no other than Jack Sikma. He knows the game plan and what must be down without missing a beat.

The article does not say those assistant coaches are of "particular interest". Rather, it says "also interested in...". Not the same thing.

    Exactly.

We need to sacrifice all the assistants for a good draft pick and an injury-free future.

maybe he was a good assistant and did what adelman wanted, even if he disagreed. And maybe he'd run things the way morey/les prefer as a HC

This is such a misconception. The Rockets most assuredly did not fire Rick Adelman.

Am I crazy for wanting to give a shot to the Spurs assistant - Mike Budenholzer? I know virtually nothing about him except that being the lead assistant on (in my opinion) the best coached team in the NBA seems like a decent gamble. Les probably wouldn't have to pay him top coach salary like he has had to shell out for Adelman and JVG and if he ends up being good we give him a raise and keep him when we come out of our rebuilding phase.

Just remember, P.J. Carlissimo was also a "lead assistant" on those Spurs teams and Gary Kubiak was a "lead assistant" on a Superbowl team. Not that I have anything against Budenholzer, but the "lead assistant on a good team becoming a head coach" itsn't foolproof.

For every Belichick there's a Mangini.
