He's had heart problems the last few years. About a month ago he collapsed and the vet said he didn't have much longer.

He collapsed again this morning. My mother(who takes care of him) has jury duty(talk about horrible timing), and I have to go to school shortly. He really needs to be put down. :(

I've been holding him off and on this morning, and helping him drink(he can't stand up on his own), but I feel like such an ******* leaving.

I don't want him to die alone. :(

AntiSonic - I am treading on real thin ice here, since I don't know you or your situation. But somewhere on down the road, noone will give a rat's a$$ if you went to school today, but you will always remember being with your dog at this time. Like anyone else who has lost a dog (or several), my heart is breaking for you. Best of luck.

Maybe you can take him to your vet on the way to school. Just explain the situation to them and tell them to care for him until you and your mother can be there to make a decision about whether or not to have him put to sleep. I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this right now.

I agree with Mrs. JB and Pipe....

Skip school and take the dog to the vet, have him put down with dignity and don't let him suffer by himself at home, alone... it's very sad and I am very sorry, but please remember all the good times and how much that dog unconditionally loved you and your family...

    good luck my friend...

this makes me cry. A neighbor of mine told me story about his old dog went off into the sunset to die. He walked down to the end of the block and laid in a neighbor's yard. There are stories of dogs dying with dignity this way.

I think it is a wonderful thing. I truly hope my dog knows the day and let's me know the day. I will take her to a park and lie with her all day if she wants to...scratching her head.

OK...you got my eyes watering know.

When the unfortunate occurs its so aweful because your pets seem so much a part of your soul. I grieve with you.

I also agree with this. If my parents' dog (which I consider my dog as well) was in this shape, I would take off from work to take him to a vet.

Sorry that you have to see him suffer.:(

Unless there's an exam or something that can't be made up, I'd skip school and spend the time with him. I made that same mistake a year ago. My dog got sick and I took him to the vet. The vet said he needed to stay overnight but I didn't visit the next day. The vet then said that he needed to stay another night, yet I still didn't visit. The next morning, the vet called to say he died.....:( I'll always regret not being there for him. He trusted me and I got too caught up with work to even take the time to visit. My sister was able to visit before he passed. I'll NEVER make that mistake again. I could have been there but I wasn't..... never, ever again.....:(

AntiSonic, stay home man. I'm so sorry. Don't let him be alone if he goes. As a teacher, I'll be the first to tell you, school is not the most important thing out there. :(

Hi Antisonic. I'm sure your dog knows how much you love him. Have to agree with a lot of people here though. If you feel like you can get back home, you'd probably be glad later on. I was in college when my main childhood dog passed away; I just missed getting home in time. :( So I wish I had skipped some classes sooner.

Thank you for all the support. It really does mean a lot.

I considered taking him to the vet, but then I thought of him dying there- alone, abandoned in a cage in some alien environment with a bunch of strangers.

I carried him around outside for awhile, just in case this would be our last time together, and said goodbye. Kind of ironic with the day being so beautiful and all. I haven't cried like that in a long time.

I was able to skip first period, but my last two classes were really important today so I had to gamble and go to them. Fortunately, Charles was still hanging on when I got back and is doing a little better(he can actually walk now, thank goodness).

Unfortunately, I can't get ahold of my mother to get the ok to have him... put down. :(

She needs to get here soon.

Thanks a lot guys. Sorry if hearing about this evoked any sad memories.

My old dog, now with my folks, is also at death's door, though perhaps not quite as close. She has kidney problems and liver problems and tumors and probably other things we haven't diagnosed yet. She was very bad off over the summer and, if my father had been in the country, we would probably have put her down. But, she's recovered somewhat and we let her hang on because she seems happy most of the time. But, she keeps having episodes and I know it won't be much longer until we do have to put her down. It'll be sad when the time comes, but she's hung around at least 14 years (there's some dispute about her age) and it seems right and proper that she go soon.

I think thats probably what my dog did. He was getting pretty old and was not exactly healthy. One day he left and we never saw him again. I was sad, but I don't think I could have taken seeing him dead.

As for AntiSonic, I couldn't really disagree with most people here. I would have done my best to stay with him as long as I could, at least till someone else could watch him. I remember when my dog got pretty sick one time, my mom, sisters, and I all stayed with him. He got better.

Sorry to hear your dog is having big problems.

And as for evoking sad memories, I have no problems with remembering my dog. I like to remember all the fun times we had together, and even though I do cry at times because I miss him, I am happy remembering him.

Sorry to hear, man. Thanks for sharing. This is probably something I'm going to have to start preparing for too. My pup (she's 16, but I still call her pup) is coming close to the end too. She can barely see and barely hear, but she's still surprisingly frisky for her age. I got her when I was 7, and now I'm 23, so she's pretty much grown up with me. She's at home with my parents now, and I'm dreading the day I get that call telling me she's gone. :( I try not to even think about it.

AntiSonic -- my condolences and prayers are with you this evening. Our pets become a part of us, to where they aren't even "our pets", but our friends and family members. When they go, they take a part of us with them. But they leave a part of themselves with us -- the wonderful memories we have. Gosh, now I'm getting all teary-eyed . . . What are some of your favorite memories with your dog?
