Dwights a better rebounder though. Gets around half a block more a game. The kicker is he doesnt have foot problems.

Why does the guy receiving the second-most first place votes not get in the top 10?

Also Bogans and Noah received first place votes but Deng got into the top 10?

Idk totally. I this Dwight Howard is head and shoulders above
any version of Yao we have seen on the court. I would put him on par with a prime shaq all and all when you balance things out and consider both ends of the court. I think Dwight is the best defensive center since dream and he is gaining. The only thing he lacks on defense that dream had is the ability to retain possession of blocked shots and the ability to step out on the pick and roll and stay in front of smaller players. He would have a much harder time defending dream than dream would have defending him. I think he is just as athletic if not more than dream, but I don't think he will ever have the foot
speed/footwork that made dream so dominant on defense.

I think the only defensive center in history that would have a prayer of stopping dream in his prime is dream himself, the
    Defensive version.....

A prime Shaq is still better than a prime D. Howard

I hate Shaq, but no one changed a game more than his big ass. More rings, better offensive game, Shaq in his prime is better than DH, but that could change. However, I get the choice between Shaq and Howard at the same age, its Shaq.

Thats true but Shaq would have the same amount as hell guarding him too.....I think D.Howard when its said and done will go down as a top 3 center all time.......Hi Haters!!!....

You guys realize it's been two years since Yao was healthy, and Dwight's gotten considerably better since then... Right?

Also, Shaq in his prime would have torn DH apart. Dwight is basically a young David Robinson without the face-up game.

Wow what a sad state the NBA is in. Howard deserves the award, but he is not the defensive star like Hakeem, Mutombo or even Mourning. There really are no great big man in the NBA any more. It is a guards league.

Howard is much better now than Yao ever was.

Wow LOL. Come on Howard is a great center. but top 3 all time? Many people believe Hakeem is not even top 3 all time, and Dwight is not even close to Hakeem. Dwight really needs to win a couple of championships as the main player on the team in order to be even mentioned in the discussion of best centers of all time (and I really do not see him being top 5 center of all time, top 10 might be possible)

    Top 3?

How can he even break into the top 3 when there's Shaq, Hakeem, and Kareem already up there.

    I don't see it.

Not sure why you are so sure this is true. In their head-to-head matchups (which is only one way of comparing players), Yao was in his prime while Howard was in his early 20's. DH nowadays has a semblance of a perimeter game with his jumper, and historically guys like these are where Yao struggles. DH can sit on the elbow and take jumpers, then when Yao lumbers toward him he can charge into the paint for the defensive foul.

Dwight is damn good, there is no doubt about it. But, he wouldn't put up these numbers on Hakeem, Robinson, Ewing, Sabonis, Alonzo, Smits, Daugherty, Mutombo, Divac or Shaq. Going through a season facing this bunch must have been a grind. Watch some old timer games and focus on how they pushed each other down low, it was a struggle just to get a rebound.....just not as physical as it used to be....pussified.

Dwight Howard couldn't stop Dream and he wasn't able to stop Yao. That makes him not special in my book. There is a difference between very good or even great and special.

The Dream was special. Once in a lifetime. Howard is once in a decade.

Have you seen DH jumper on a regular basis. Its not consistent and can be altered very easily, given his release form. His jump shot isn't one that would force to keep the opposing defender honest.

I'm speaking as a total package center..One who dominates on both ends of the floor.... No matter how your say it , He Dominates!!!....If he had a better coach , who should have figured out that the ball should start inside out , maybe he would have had a ring or two by now........But yeah, youre right, maybe not top 3 but definitely top 5.....(remember both ends)....
