I'm thinking of a classy way to respond to a fan with no affiliation to the school other than being a "fan" calling me a moron. But I'll drop it. I have something you can't buy.
NC State - 3 second half points. K-State - 6 turnovers. And you didn't answer my question. How come? P.S. - we all saw Simms score two TDs against OU, so we all know that stat is bull****. Simms is the RB now? What does the QB have to do with the poorly designed, and unimaginative running game Texas employs?
something Chris Simms can't do. and he had Ricky Williams for one of his seasons.
Simms has had Benson, for now, just short of 2 seasons Being a good improvisor is nice in a quarterback, but it shouldn't be a requirement when you have the talent that this team has.
Ok then well, Simms is not accurate, his throwing motion is slow, and for a 6'5" guy he gets passes tipped at the line of scrimmage. those shouldn't be requirements though either huh? I realize one thing, that Chris Simms is probably the best quarterback in the (at least recent) history of the University of Texas, and one of the top ones in the country.
Major has all the records. Greg Davis has had the same offense for years, so it's extremely doubtful that it magically "changes" when there's a scrambling QB.
But the offensive numbers on the field can only get better, with a new QB under center. Unless Mock or Vincent has a Brett Favre type ability to improvise, the same thing is going to happen over and over again.
Comparing college players to an NFL great, yeah that's fair. I wonder how many players are going to have to underachieve at UT before some fans drop the hard-headed notion that it's the players.
Chris Simms is a player. So does that mean you think he is an underachiever? Should an underachieving QB be considered one of the best in the country? amazing cat, amazing.
Oh, ok. So, I decided to delay going to UT for a semester because I didn't get appropriate housing, and that makes me less knowledgable and less of a fan? Thanks so much.
Bottom line about the Simms vs Applewhite debate... Who thrived under Greg Davis? Applewhite Who had more talent around him? Simms Who did more in spite of being surrounded by less talent? Applewhite I don't care that Major struggled against teams in parts of the 99 and 00 seasons (though it is a somewhat valid point), because if he had the arsenal of weapons that Simms has around him, chances are he would have done better. If you put the current day Simms onto the 99 UT team, does UT beat NC State? K-State? One last question... Which QB had to "save" the other from embarrasing himself further, in the CU Big 12 title game, and the Holiday Bowl. Major damn near fixed what Simms "broke" by mounting a comeback against CU. And then he was able to succeed in coming back from a 21 pt deficit after Simms went AWOL.
I heard boos when Simms was dropped several times instead of getting rid of the football. I did not hear anything directed towards Davis. It's a large stadium. The boos and moans were louder than any words. I guess not hearing obscenities towards Davis makes me a moron. That is why I said what I did.
something Chris Simms can't do. And neither can some NFL quarterbacks. Kurt Warner isn't a great improvisor either, and he's the MVP. However, when you have a system with the talent of Texas, the system should be good enough in the first place. Simms has had Benson, for now, just short of 2 seasons Benson is nowhere close to Ricky Williams. Ok then well, Simms is not accurate, his throwing motion is slow, and for a 6'5" guy he gets passes tipped at the line of scrimmage. those shouldn't be requirements though either huh? Simms is one of the most accurate quarterbacks I've seen this year, his throwing motion is fine, and the passes tipped is partially dependent on the protection he gets from the offensive line. Major has all the records. And the one that means the most to me, wins, belongs to Simms. When Major wins 10 games in a season, let me know. Comparing college players to an NFL great, yeah that's fair. Major had that ability. And that's almost the only scenario that a quarterback can excel in with a Greg Davis offense. Chris Simms is a player. So does that mean you think he is an underachiever? Should an underachieving QB be considered one of the best in the country? I mean underachieved statistically. I don't look at a quarterbacks numbers and decide how good he is. I consider how he gets those numbers and compare them to other quarterbacks. (ex. what system he plays in, passes per game, running game, etc.)
Like Simms in the Big 12 game, Major threw three interceptions in the first half of the Holiday Bowl. It's not fair to compare the two games, since Major got to play in the second half after his mistakes, and Chris didn't.
Assuming the boos were directed to Simms seems a little ridiculous to me. I did overstate it, and for that I apologize, but I still don't see where you got that from.
Some people don't want to believe the facts. Simms is a good QB (23-5 record). The poor playcalling is a result of the coaching staff not having confidence in Simms. They would rather run Benson than throw a pass. When pass plays are called, they're usually of the short variety to prevent interceptions. Mack has not seen a problem with the playcalling because he agrees with GD.
while i do not agree with Cat that chris simms is a good qb, i would say almost all booing (edit: except for those 9 seconds to throw in the pocket sacks) was geared toward greg. i know my friends and i constantly make fun of the playcalling throughout games.
So you think that Simms would have come out firing? ha I think his "finger injury" was there to save him from further disaster on the field, and from the boos.
I agree. This sounds like the typical-NFL style. If Simms is to ever be a good NFL QB, he must learn to execute in the most simplistic/unimaginative offenses around.
It's not a hard question to answer : Our running game is unimaginative, and is poorly concieved, often ignoring the fact that there are 11 guys out there who will be playing defense - ex : Benson gets a toss right, LB, CB and Safety converge - they of course can do it because they've got no reason not to - how many blockers did we pull to clear a lane for Benson? None. Only BJ Johnson was over there to block for him. BJ whiffs on the LB, no gain for Benson. Why was that play designed? Why was it called? Why put your wideout in a position to have to block a linebacker? Why put your running back in a position where he has to beat two men to get even positive yardage? Poorly designed, unimaginative play. What does that have to do with Simms? Our running game sucks regardless of the QB.
Are these plays any different than what Ricky had to run with? Obviously, Ricky is better than Ced is, at the moment, but still. Ricky was able to still succeed under 2 OC's actually, whoever was the OC under Mackovic, and then Greg Davis.
It's possible. You never know unless it happens. BTW, most of the boos of that game were directed at Mack Brown, not at Chris Simms. (yes, I was one of them, and so were the people around me) Players have bad games... the pressure is on the coaches to adapt. Chris had a bad game, but he's not just going to take himself out of the game. Most of the people were booing Mack Brown for not recognizing this and making the change sooner.
Obviously, we never know for certain. But, Simms hasn't set a precendence in coming back from a horrible 4-5 possesion stretch. It's hard for me to give him the benefit of the doubt, as far as coming back from that disaster.
