I've been saying this for years, but it seems like you have to have a finance degree to understand/enjoy professional sports these days. As soon as people start talking about the salary cap, CBA, franchise designation, blah blah blah, my brain just shuts down. I just want to watch the games, man. Yeah, I'm glad the purity of college football isn't being tainted by such things as big money.......
a little part of me dies everytime I overhear my 9 yo talking to his friends about "good contracts" and "signed for a long time" .
Yeah things are certainly different these days eh? Fans returning after labor disputes is really a testament to the love of the game sports fans have. Here we have 2 sets of millionaires fighting for the money the have nots of the world (us) provide them. It would be funny if it weren't so sickening....and yet... We will be back. My greatest hope is that both the NBA and NFL figure out a long term strategy that keeps small market teams competitive so that its a LONG time before the next labor dispute. Its not much but at least its something to root for...
I hear ya, but I like knowing what the long-term outlook is of my teams and you have to understand some of that financial/legal stuff to know that. For instance, knowing that the Rockets have a lot of young, inexpensive players that are attractive in trades and knowing when we will have cap room helps to look forward to the future when the team isn't doing so well. Or knowing that the Astros are stuck with Carlos Lee's fat salary and there is nothing they can do about it.
There's always UFC.... but if there really was a lockout in the NFL that means no Fantasy football. One of the greatest things ever invented.
