Juwon Howard and Keith Van Horn were scapegoats for pushing a salary cap.

Joe Johnson has been overrated for a long time. He's a five-time consecutive All-Star, which alone would suggest that he's some future Hall of Fame player. And he's been getting that vaunted "20-5-5" per game average for years. Only he's got those averages by playing about 40 mpg, and even then you have to round up quite generously for him to actually be "20-5-5."

His rebounding and assist numbers are crappy to mediocre if you consider the minutes he plays. True shooting percentage has also been mediocre despite his 3pt shooting, since this guy barely gets to the FT line. He's just not a very efficient scorer, who took about 40 mpg to just get 21 ppg. His adjusted +/- for the last several seasons has also been so-so, the result of a decent performance on offense and a terrible negative impact on defense.

This is the kind of player that fools bad GMs, and who Morey stays the hell away from.

Two pages in and nobody mentions Gilbert Arenas.

And just one mentions Juwan Howard.

    How sad.

arenas was brought down by injuries. i think he would play up to his potential or near it if he was healthy. they guy was a legit top 10 player for 2-3 years.

Rockets this year with Stoudemire could have been a 50+ win team. Stoudemire (pre-Carmelo trade) plays well with athletic small-ballers, so I like teaming hiim with Lee-Martin-Lowry-Scola-Hayes as much or more than teaming him with Gallo-Felton-Fields-Turiaf. Plus he wouldnt' have had to play as many minutes since they get post scoring from Scola.

They definitely overpaid but I don't really see what option Atlanta had. They weren't getting Lebron/Wade and the prospects they had to choose from after those two were slim for the next several years. They needed a guy who could get his own shot to make that roster go and Joe Johnson can do that from time to time AND sells tickets in Atlanta.

In short, JJ was worth more to Atlanta than anyone else. If he goes the team has no consistent scorer/creator and as a result Bibby is completely valueless because his one valuable skill(hitting open 3s) is no longer applicable if his man doesn't have to play help defense, and Horford isn't the type of player who can carry a team if the entire defense is focused on stopping him, and Josh Smith is not that guy either....and if Johnson goes, who else do they sign to fill that role? They would literally be sitting on a wad of cash with nothing to spend it on for at least two years and during that time the Hawks are losing, the fans aren't coming to games(Atlanta fans do no support losers - they are definitely fair weather fans), and the existing young core is thinking about taking their talents elsewhere as soon as they can.

Yes, Atlanta probably could have paid him less but they also couldn't have afforded to let him go because their business model only works if they are at least playoff competitive and when owners can't agree(as is the case with Atlanta), the tiebreaker is "which decisions makes us more money" and Johnson probably does that for the next several years compared to what his contract costs the team.

WTF are you talking about? Scola gave us 18 and 8 this year, I don't know if you noticed, but big men who produce at that amount don't get paid just 9M a year.

The problem with this is the Hawks were the only ones who wanted to sign JJ for that amount of money. Even if they couldn't afford to let him walk, nobody told them to sign him for that ridiculous amount of money.I honestly don't think anybody would have given him more than 10M on the open market. esp. with how he always chokes during playoff time

You guys must have forgotten Allan Houston. There's a rule named after him.
