I am talking like back in the day of the middle ages...

I am sure bakers had to be up at a certain hour, or Horse trainers etc...but how did they wake up before alarm clocks?

Any people that can answer wins YDS Rep!

Bells or farm animals. Maybe homeless urban dwellers who slept without roofs.

I'm guessing keeping time wasn't as strictly enforced and it was farmers that wanted extra production that would need the most daylight.

Plus, there wasn't that much to do at night, so it's not like Baker Jedediah was up all night searching through periodicals for sinful drawings of comely lasses and couldn't wake up at the ass crack of dawn to beat rush hour among the other carriages because of it.

    or

    If not roosters.

The night is generally quiet, but just before the sun rises birds always wake up and begin chirping.

I also agree with RedRedemption, in that your body get's used to waking up around that time if you go to bed early enough.

where there was no getting up at an exact hour of course (no clocks) so my best guess is roosters, or maybe they were just used to waking up before the dawn, like someone else said, an internal clock. Just like I'm used to waking up right around 11. No clock.

There was no electricity so there wasn't much to do at night. I'm guessing most people were asleep by 8 or so. Naturally, you're going to wake up early.

I was going to say internal clock, because that's how I wake up. I just tell myself, ok I will wake up at about 9 or something, and (unless I'm disturbed in the night), I will wake up +/- 30 minutes around 9.

But then I realised, hypothetically, 'back in the day' there were no clocks. So there were relatively few measurements of time right? You can't just have a sundial on your wrist that you look at when you wake up. So even if people did have internal clocks, what would they think when they go to bed? I shall wake up when the sun looks a bit pink, but not too pink? Rooster's probably the right answer, or somebody ringing the local church bell.

City slicker. A person can tell the time by just looking at how high the sun is in the sky.

When I really have to get up for something important, like an early morning mid-term, or wake up early to finish a paper, my mental alarm does go off and I am able to wake up usually just minutes before my actual alarm goes off.

Otherwise, I need a real alarm to go off to wake up

Haha, that's true. I've almost never guessed the time by the position of the sun......there's usually a tall building in the way....

The internal clock is a pretty impressive piece of human machinery.

Church bells. They still ring them in Europe. Dunno how the guys who ring them wake up, though.
