JCDENTON obviously hasnt tried it out. People on here suck and rush to judgment and think they are cool. Im probably not buying one but it is pretty damn cool. I played Pilot Wings and adjusted the 3D settings to how I wanted it and it looked very cool. No one is looking for mindblowing graphics, just a solid 3D portable system. I dont see any need to compare it to anything else honestly. I would get the PSP and 3DS for different reasons.

Wait, you really think the NGP is going to have better battery life? It has a much stronger processor, its probably going to have one of the worst battery lives of any handheld if they do everything they want with it. And 3D is really not something you can judge until you play the thing. I have a 3DS and think the 3d works very well, much better than I expected. Also, one of the things that is very cool with it is the AR, something else you got to try to see. Can't wait to see how games use that.

Also, go look up Resident Evil Revelations. This thing can produce graphics better than the PSP, most devs just aren't pushing it yet (Which happens at every launch).

3DS so far is a great system and they've shown dozens of games I want for it, the upcoming line-up is amazing. NGP doesn't have that line-up behind it yet. Not to mention it'll probably cost $400 and have a 2 hour battery life, but if thats what you want, go for it.

I think it's so funny that people dismiss a system based on hardware. Video gaming is, and always SHOULD be, about the games themselves and how much fun they are.

I still have old games on my N64 that I lament being unable to play (the power supply crapped out and I haven't been able to replace it) because they were that much fun. I don't care that the graphics are terrible compared to today's consoles. They are FUN.

I don't think anything will tear through a battery like the Game Gear.

The NGP may very well have better battery life. The 3D and dual screens eat up a lot of power. Also, it's no secret that Nintendo cheaped out on the 3DS. It costs $100 to build and they're selling it for $250. NGP will probably be $300-$400 and probably priced close to cost or even at a loss. So it's very conceivable that it will have a higher capacity battery. It was already stated that NGP has similar battery life to PSP, which in my experience was 4-6 hours on an overclocked system. The 3DS has what, 3 hour battery life if you turn the 3D on and a bit more if you cut the wifi?

I know all about RE (which doesn't look THAT much better than the top PSP games) and the AR. People want to cast me as some kind of fanboy but I actually had the 3DS preordered the first day it went up on Amazon and paid a lot of attention to the system. I didn't cancel until the game reviews started coming out recently and I found out Monkey Ball and Pilotwings would be horrible, and the Ridge Racer game is just a bunch of recycled tracks. The only launch game worth a damn is Ghost Recon and I don't need that right now because I'm busy with Shogun 2 Total War. Oh, and Street Fighter but I don't like SF4 and fighting games need a real controller anyway. Rayman could have contended as IMO Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast is one of the top 20 games of all time, but it is allegedly a straight port and a sloppy port.

About to go check it out at Gamestop. They're running a promo where you can trade in your DSi and get the 3DS for $174.99. You guys think that's good deal?

If you go to IGN, almost all games are rated well. Personally I wouldnt play Ridge Racer even if it was rated well though. So maybe its just taste in games?? PilotWings is pretty fun from what I played. I understand not wanting the 3DS but when you first commented on it, it seemed like a fanboy response. If not then sorry to take it that way. There are so many games coming out for 3DS that its ridiculous. Anyone who likes videogames should want to play the Zelda port. The 3D just looks very cool. I dont get dizzy from 3D though. If I did then it would be pointless to buy. Its a solid system though. I would probably like the NGP also but had a psp for a little while but it was too hard to see the screen during the day. I tried playing Socom on it and it was hard to see. Im sure the NGP will be better though. Nintendo has always had a firm hold on the portable gaming. Im a sony guy but that I admit for sure.

Price drop to $170 on 08/12

Well that's one way to jump start sluggish sales.

Nintendo has just announced that the price on the 3DS will drop to $169.99 stateside on August 12. That's down from $250 currently, which we don't have to tell you is a pretty shocking drop, considering the tech involved and how recently the system was released.

A similar cut in Japan (effective August 11) will take the system from 25,000 Yen (around $317) to 15,000 Yen ($190). We don't yet have a specific price for a corresponding European cut, but Nintendo tells Eurogamer the price will drop by "about a third."

I tried it out at a game store. The 3D effect kind of makes me dizzy and doesn't look all that 3D-ish to me. Maybe I'm just one of those people whose eyes don't perceive 3D effects very well.

Same for me and my wife. Preferred playing it in 2D, though I could see the 3D, it wasn't worth it. Only reason I would buy is because I can't play 3DS games on the DSlite.

The battery life for 3DS is horrible, wasn't the original selling point of Game Boy is it's battery life? the black & white system crushed Game Gear despite graphical disadvantages?

3DS got like a 3 hour battery life or something like that... meh

I may get the old generation just to play Pokemon though :p

    Nintendo is really scrambling....

Nintendo launches 3DS circle pad add-on

Nintendo 3DS gets a new lease of life with add-on circle pad and a bounty of new games supporting the new feature.

Nintendo have unveiled an add-on for their Nintendo 3DS handheld console that will allow gamers to use two circle pads. Revealed at Nintendo’s press conference before the Tokyo Games Show and priced at 1500 yen (£12.30), the add-on will be released in Japan on 12th of December.

With the add-on, Nintendo are hoping to provide enhanced usability, with the extra circle pad mirroring the dual-stick layout of many home console controllers

Along with this, Nintendo have announced a glut of new games which will support the extra circle pad. Monster Hunter Tri G, released later this year, will be one of the first games to use the accessory. Other games making use of the new add-on are: Resident Evil: Revelations (set to come out in early 2012), Dynasty Warriors Vs (2012) Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D and Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble. At the conference Capcom also anounced that development for the long awaited Monster Hunter 4 is already underway for 3DS.

Previously a handheld exclusive to Sony’s PSP, Monster Hunter is one of Japan’s most popular video game series, and the announcement that Monster Hunter 4 will be coming to 3DS will be a blow to Sony’s upcoming handheld console, PlayStation Vita, which releases later this year in Japan and early 2012 for the rest of the world.

Nintendo also revealed a forthcoming software update for the 3DS will allow it to record 3D movies. Meanwhile, Mario Kart 7 will release for the 3DS in December, including a first person, gyroscope controlled driving mode. And Super Mario 3D Land is set to hit shops in November.

The deluge of announcements is an attempt by Nintendo to increase the 3DS’s slow sales, which has already forced the company to introduce a hefty price cut for the console less than six months after release.

I bought a 3DS. I've used it quite a bit with Zelda (in 3D) and Radiant Historia (not 3D). Here are some of my thoughts:

Overall, the design is terrible. It doesn't fit in my hands comfortably at all; I have to contort my hand/thumb in order to accurately use the analog stick on the left. The buttons on the right are in an equally awkward spot.

The 3D sucks. Sure, if you look at it straight on, it's in lovely 3D, but often you move your DS when playing. It's not fixed. In fact, many games use an accelerometer for functionality (e.g. moving your DS to aim for the slingshot in Zelda), so you have to move the unit. If you're looking at it slightly offset, the image immediately becomes slightly doubled and a bit blurry in 3D mode. It's really annoying.

Not only that, but the battery life is terrible. 3-4 hours with 3D on? I got a battery pack addition which helps, and I don't really use the 3D anyway, but the battery life is still worse than an older DSi because of the necessary extra brightness for the 3D functionality I'm not even using.

In summation: don't buy it. Worst purchase ever for me, and the biggest mistake Nintendo has made in the handheld market since VirtualBoy (which wasn't really a handheld anyway).

I think overall the add on will add a lot of comfort, like a PS3 controller. The shoulder buttons will allow developers to design games for both Vita and 3DS without having to compromise the control scheme.
