Formula to be MVP First requirement, be top 2 in your position, and hopefully top 5 player in the league. Have a solid and well balanced team but no one teammate that is as well rounded and greater than you are. Final step 3 have top 3 record in the league, or No.1 record in your conference. Steve Nash was the best pg at the time hands down, his team had the best record in the league. Shoe in MVP. DRose this year, top 2 PG this year, Best record in the east. No other all star on his team. (good candidate, but not as sure as Nash) Lebron last year, Best player in the league, Team has best record in the league. ( probably the most deserving MVP in a while)
Shaq should probably have more than one MVP, but Kobe shouldn't. He wasn't an MVP when he wasn't even the best player on his team. That takes us up to 2004. In 2005, his team missed the playoffs, so he clearly wasn't the most valuable player in the league. In 2006 and 2007, his team was barely a playoff team, but I think you could make an argument for him. He won it in 2008. In 2009 and 2010, Lebron had the better stats and more regular season wins both seasons, with a far weaker supporting cast. So when exactly was Kobe robbed of these extra MVPs he "deserved"?
You're absolutely right. The Celtics team D is so great that they could still be a top defensive team even if they replaced Rondo with Nash. The extra dimension Nash would give them as a shooter would make that team really scary. They would have the best shooting backcourt in the history of the game.
Lakers in 06 and 07 had no chance to win it all even if they took Suns. What's hurt? The 10 win over Suns was the real deal.
Exactly. He probably should have won '06-07 MVP as well. If I recall correctly, his assists and shooting percentages that year were all better than the previous two MVP years.
comparing Nash's stats to his previous yrs stats is meaningless. He's not competing against 2005 Nash. He's up against 2011 Rose/Wade/James/Bryant. 2005 Nash deserved it over 2005 Kobe/Shaq. 2011 Nash is pretty fly for an old guy. Silly thread is silly.
What about defense? There are 2 parts to the game. I agree Nash is impressive offensively, but he's a little slow on D. Derrick Rose is shooting 43.5% - you have to do better than that to be MVP in my book. I'd vote for Dwight Howard.
Steve Nash is the best 37-year-old PG in history. Amazing how little he's given up to age, has any other player made themselves into a hall-of-famer in their mid-to-late thirties? Not the MVP, but still a top-3 offensive PG in the league.
