Memphis Grizzlies, Zach Randolph getting closer to contract

[rquoter]Zach Randolph has been a pillar in the post for the Grizzlies over the past two seasons.

Now, the gutsy power forward seems closer to cementing his place in Memphis for several years to come.

The Griz initiated and held serious contract negotiations with Randolph over the past week, and both sides continue to discuss the framework of a four-year deal that could be finalized soon.

Randolph's agent, Raymond Brothers, and Griz general manager Chris Wallace confirmed that they have been involved in constructive talks after months of inactivity.

"I think they're serious," Brothers said of the Grizzlies' intent to sign Randolph. "I'm optimistic we'll get something done."

...This is also the first time since the regular season began that the Griz and Randolph's camp have held concrete discussions about a contract extension.

The Griz presented an offer that Brothers deemed a good starting point but the financial package is not known.

Randolph, 29, is earning $17.3 million this season in what is the final year of a six-year deal he originally signed with Portland. It is believed that Randolph has relaxed his initial demand for an extension similar to the three-year, $65 million deal Pau Gasol signed with the Los Angeles Lakers last summer.

Randolph, who leads the Grizzlies with 20.1 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, would become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season if no deal is reached. That means Randolph would be free to sign with any team and the Griz could lose him without compensation.[/rquoter]

Are the Grizzlies making an either/or decision and choosing Randolph over Gasol? IF so this is very very, interesting. Too bad we won't have the money to make the winning bid for him, maybe we could workout a sign and trade.

He's really shined in Memphis and deserves a contract extension. And he's consistently put up 20/10 since Portland, so it's not like he's a contract year player only. It's baffling that Elton Brand was so highly sought after despite being seriously injured and having no more team success than Randolph did.

    Huh?
Elton Brand was a key piece to making the CLIPPERS relevant and was a fringe MVP candidate in 2006. He's had far more success than Randolph.

Either way, wonder how much they would extend him for. I'm sure it won't be for less than 9 million, however.

Memphis have $37M on the books for next season to the Rockets $48M. Dumping Thabeet's contract makes it even easier for the Grizzlies to match any offer for Gasol.

That would tie 4 players into LONG term big money contracts for a team that may not even make the playoffs. Also consider that a hard cap is probably coming into play. It has been widely understood that it was either Z-Bo or Marc, not both, unless their owner decided that he is willing to spend that much into 4 players.

Most pundits that "widely understood" that the grizzlies will be in an either/or situation have based the majority of their speculation on one perceived salary dump deal. Other than that, and a very embarrassing rookie deal negotiation with Xavier Henry and Greivis Vasquez, Heisley has consistently spent money to field a competitive team.

The grizzlies will most likely make an offer to Marc, but I do believe that his negotiation by design will be much more take it or leave it proposition, meaning that the Grizzlies are far less worried about signing Marc than you might think. He has been up and down all year long, and with the addition of Battier and Tony Allen and especially with the emergence of Darrell Arthur, you might be surprised that the grizzlies are willing to let him go.

But like I said, if Hollins gives the okay, yall or no one in the league will snatch gasol or randolph from us. We have built up a certain amount of loyalty with those two nad they want to be grizzlies. So stop all of the hating, they grizzlies are about to be fixtures in the playoffs for years to come.

After those signings their team payroll next season will still less than it is this season. If a player is good enough they can always trade him later.

Zach Randolph is their best player -- makes sense.

So...will they re-sign him or not? On one hand, they don't have another center on his level but on the other you make it seem like they have a limit on what they are willing to spend on him. Being a Griz fan, what's your take on Gasol? Legit 12 million a year guy or is that overpaying for a 7 footer?

If you've watched the grizzlies closely, lately a lot of the end of game minutes at center are going to Darrell Arthur.

Based on this season alone I believe that Gasol at 12 million a year is overpaying him, and I also believe that the priority on signing him "at any cost" has wavered. I think that the determining factor on whether he gets a competitive offer from the grizzlies is Lionel Hollins. Hollins has the ear of Heisley at this point, and whatever he wants he'll get.

To your question, I believe that Marc doesn't fit the team as well as we thought he did. He is a very good and smart player, but he doesn't make enough plays to warrant a big contract. So, year, the grizzlies might try to save money by not making him a huge offer, but only because they believe that he is not in their plans. It won't be JUST about money.

I think it would be a mistake for the Grizzlies to sign Z-Bo and let Gasol go. I admit to not watching them much, but IMO Z-Bo's presence holds Gasol back. If/when Gasol starts playing with a PF that handles the ball less, he will grow and take a step to another level.

I know Randolph is the Grizzlies most talented player, but he'll be 30 this summer and it's downhill from there. Gasol will be starting the prime of his career.

what, the Grizzlies are entering a long period of mediocrity. What they are doing now reminds me of Jerry West's tenure. There isn't one single, solitary difference-maker on that team. Z-Bo has put up good stat lines the last couple of seasons, but if he's your main guy going forward, the Grizzlies will go nowhere at all.

    Have fun.

The grizzlies actually have Rudy as our main guy, who has made more game-winning shots than anybody behind Kobe. I know it hurts you but:

They have a bunch of pretty good players, but no true impact player that can carry the team to contender status.

Look, winning 45-50 games is better than missing the playoffs. But the roster as presently constructed cannot be tweaked into a contender. The Grizzlies need to make a big move.

The videos above belie that. Take a gander.
