Apparently, Keith Van Horn is available. New Jersey wants to find a replacement for Kittles (and probably Gill) and are interested in Mercer.

They have McIllvaine, second-year player Eschmeyer, and rookie seven-footer Soumaila Walker at the center position. Martin will probably play the PF position, Marbury at PG, and some suspect SF's.

Walt Williams worked well with Francis...and could probably have the same results with Marbury. Williams and part of the exception for Van Horn is a reasonable trade.

Whats his contract look like. While definitely an upgrade over WW, I wouldnt be too excited about him comin ghere if he had a big contract. He just isnt the type of player that will lead anyone to the promised land. While very good, he is not worth a ton of money and cap space. But if he has a reasonable contract, Id do it. Of course, then wed all have to watch out for some more of those dumb racist rockets threads.

He has a long term deal (maxed out....ends in around 05 I believe). Walt and the exception for him would be murder, Van Horn's still very young, and can score 20 ppg, or nab 10 boards. Who says Van Horn won't play SF for New Jersey, or they won't go with a strange lineup with Martin at center?

The Nets probably wouldn't mind dealing Van Horn, but they're not looking to get screwed either.

Van Horn says he will not play SF in NJ. Seriously though, in the past he has been quoted as saying he prefers the PF position b/c he is not quick enough to chase the agile SF's in the league.

I personally think that NJ will go with Van Horn and Martin as simple forwards.

Van Horn can guard PFs on the defensive end, as Martin possesses the quickness to keep up as a SF (that creates a problem of losing his shot blocking ability, but Outlaw plays some SF...they could also play KMart at center if they wanted). Then on offense, Van Horn plays SF, which is how he plays anyway.

Van Horn can complain about prefering PF all he wants, the point is, he's locked into a long contract, with no "outs", so he could suck it up, or probably be benched. He's not better suited for either, because he's burned defensively as a PF as well. A call from his friend Jayson Williams could change his attitude too.

Remember, NJ also needs Van Horn as insurance if KMart gets hurt, it may have been a freak injury, but who's to say that won't happen again?

In any case, Walt/exception is not nearly enough for him, as there will be much better offers on the table for NJ.

Never undersetimate the the value of the exception.....Their team is screwed capwise, walt's contract is a litte cheaper and shorter, AND the little part of the exception that they would get can help them out.....BUT, I'm not sure Van Horn's a houston-type player, i tink, even as a PF he's a little slow......He's not a tough guy that can play Webber or Rasheed, but i guess he's an upgrade over Kenny or MAYBE Walt.....But that would destroy us capwise, so this wouldn't benefit us.....They would love to have Walt though.......

One more thing, Kenyon was quoted as saying he'd rather play PG than C....so that's not an option.....

No way do I want Van Horn on this team at the max salary. That is far too much cap room to commit to him. I would much rather hold the cap space for the free agent hunt in 2001 to target Rashard Lewis. Van Horn is a terrible defensive player and as it is, our defense is questionable. We need a long armed, quick, agile athlete like Lewis at the 3 spot not a defensively inept Van Horn.

Van Horn is a good player, he can score and boards well, but lacks a bit on defense. However, he his contract will take a nice chunk of the cap. Plus the Nets will not let him go unless its for some impact players. The previous rumored trades involved Mutombo for Van Horn and a sign and trade with Detriot for Hill. The Wizard doesn't really fall in that category.

Who's better: Van Horn or Troy Murphy (the guy I bet we target in next year's draft)?

Boy do I hope we dont get Tory Murphy next year. that would be a horrible pick in my opinion. Evenif he does turn out to be alirght, I dont want him. there are so many other players out there right now with soo much more potential. Troy Murphy dominates at Notre Dame in the kind of way Jason Collier dominated the ACC in rebounding. And OCllier is having some troubles in that department in the summer league games.

There seems to be interest from teams to utilize Houston's trade exception which shows a desire to move over-priced players.

Numerous posters have mentioned moving Walt because he makes too much. If we (this BBS)know that, other teams probably have figured it out also. A team taking on Walt for another player with a contract that expires in 2001 will be a tough sell. The other player would have to be truly inferior to Walt or Houston would have to put some extra juice in the deal.

    Scenario:

It is the first week of Feb 2001 and Dan Langhi is playing good ball and pushing Walt for minutes. A team with a much better record than Houston has a small forward go down for the rest of the season. CD, Rudy and the other team are about to strike a deal to trade Walt for a reserve player with a contract expiring in 2001. Just before the deal closes, the other team says that Houston has too big an advantage in the deal by obtaining a player with an expiring contract and will have to put something else in the deal. The other team wants to swap their 2001 1st round pick for the best pick that Houston will have in 2001. (Mil?, Detroit?, Orlando?, Houston's own)

Remember, the other team has a great record and will have a very late first round pick and Houston will be swapping a good pick for a not-so good pick, but will clear cap space for summer 2001.

    Should Houston take that deal?
